LR Extended Warranties

    Hi guys,

Still lurking ... more lurking than posting though :?

Sorry if this a repost from another forum ...

Anyway my 02 FL had its 2.5 year service today (all clear) and I enquired about getting a warranty extension beyond the factory 3 years.

To which the reply was "LR no longer sell extended warranties". 8O

Apparently with the change in legislation warranties are insurance and you have to be an insurance broker to sell warranties. So LR pulled the pin. (This is from the dealer).

So now I am in a bit of a quandry. Do I keep my Freelander without the "protection" of extended warranty? Its a V6 Auto. It has given me no troubles really - only issues have been a rough cold start (which went away - bad fuel maybe?) and squealing brakes (common affliction apparently - bad batch of pads/rotors). Other than that, she has been excellent.

It's only got 32000kms on the odo (I'm away a lot for work, and my wife catches public transport to work). I want to keep it at least 5yrs, probably only have 50000 kms on the clock at that point.

What scares me is the prospect of a big $$$ engine rebuild or auto box rebuild. I have heard of a few auto box issues with Freelanders (none with mine though). It has been serviced every 6mths at the local LR dealer.

Anyone know anything more about the LR warranties? Will they return? Am I being overly paranoid. Its not like it has given me any grief ... but I worry.

    DionM,

I can't contribute directly however encourage your participation.

Freelanders are seriously unrepresented here. That is a shame.

OL forum is a great place to lurk but this is a good place to participate and building the Freelander knowledge base should be encouraged.

I hope that this will be the case.

Hi DionM, when I bought my Rangie two and a half years ago, the price included an additional two year 80,000 km extended warranty. Your posting is the first I have heard of the new flat factory warranty and had this been the case when I was enquiring about buying the Rangie, I don’t think I would have.

Anyway before you do anything, rang LRA and see what they say and if they have any options.

    Cheers

Yeah I'm always here, lurking ... I really should start posting. Especially with my Rangie languishing in the backyard :?

    Drivesafe,

This is part of my concern too. At the time of purchasing the Freelander I asked about the warranty extension, the reply to which was "don't worry about that now, you can buy it at any time".

To be honest I had sort of planned to only keep it 3 years when we bought it, but with the really low kms it now has, and the fact my wife and I really like the vehicle, and there is nothing else around to replace it, we want to keep it.

So now we want to keep it, and I want the warranty extension for peace of mind (in my view this type of insurance is a necessary evil with any car, not just Land Rovers).

I now wish I had bought the warranty at purchase time :? Still, how was I to know. I am a bit disappointed that LR dropped it and didn't give owners any options to take it up before the change of legislation (if that is the real reason).

I will certainly contacting LRA - I still have 6mths to run of warranty.

This is bad news that I didn't want to here.

I'm going to check with my LR Dealer tomorrow.

I purchased a D3 in Dec 04 and at that time I asked about extended warranty and what the cost was. The answer was LRA hasn't announced anything about extended warranty for the D3 yet but it should be similar to the D2 which was around $1000 per year and available for an additional 2 years. The salesman said you don't need to worry about that until you are nearing the end of the standard 3 year warranty (sounds just like DionM's salesman's comment).

When did the new legislation come in?

I'll see what I'm told tomorrow.

    Regards,

    Chris

Be interested to know what you find out Chris. Similarly if I find out more will let you know. From what I've heard this happened some time ago.

I believe the early FreeLanders had a lot of problems but as with the entire LR range, there have been significant quality control improvements, particularly with BMW and subsequent management changes.

I cannot believe that a car with only 32,000 k's on the clock is going to need an engine or gearbox rebuild doing 10000 k's a year and getting regular servicing.

I suspect you'd still be in front if you banked the money for the extended warranty and used it to pay for any repairs that may be required.

Worse still, you fork out for the extended warranty and when something goes wrong you discover that particular scenario is not covered.

I'm a great believer in covering one's backside, but from what you've described the risk seems low.

Just my humble opinion, please don't hunt me down if something goes wrong 8O 8O 8O

I know - I think I am being overly paranoid. I too believe most of the big problems had been sorted in the Freeo before my model year, and the low kays should mean no problems would arise. But you just never know, as you closing comment inferred
