Need some help here understanding the difference. :?

Clean skin is a new tyre, in that it has nothing carried over to make it.

Recap is there they grind all the tread off the old tyre so it's reasonably smooth and then glue sections of tread back on. That's the bit you will normally find on the sides of the road that flies off truck tyres when it all goes wrong. So the tyre is basically old/worn walls with new tread.

So what's a monoform remould ?

Hi Jay
A remould is a tad better than a retread, its a used casing with the new tread re-moulded onto the tyre from bead to bead.
Adam(Agrojnr) had a new set of remould muddies on our last outing, they were Disco size,245/70x16 or similar,he paid a whole $108ea,cheap as chips as they say!!!!.There was no mud to play in and the terrain wasnt to demanding so I cant say how good they performed, probably as good as a newie. He did have to let the tyrepressures down on the dirt as they are quite a bit stiffer in the sidewall than a new tyre.4WD monthly also pointed this out when they tested a set.

A bit about retreads / re moulds etc

A Monoform or Remould tyre is similar to a re tread in that its made using a second hand case ( that is a clean skin that has been used and the tread is worn out)

to make a re mould the case is placed into a mould and hot rubber is bonded to the sidewalls and the tread crown area. thats how they get their names on the sidewall. The rubber is moulded in place - thus its name.

Like any re manufactured tyre theyre only as good as the case and the process used to make them, there are also speed restrictions on them which may or may not have effects on your vehicle registration / insurance as your vehicle need to comply with ADR s and the tyre placard.

Having worked in the trye industry and managed a dozen or so retail tyre outlets , I would ONLY use re moulds as a last ditch effort where I cannot obtain new / second hand tyres at a good price

Balance and out of round can also be an issue, I have seen re moulds take 150grams or more of weight in an attempt to balance them.

In relation to Re treads.. it would most likely be because of price that you would purchase them, in which case my advice would be go and buy good second hand tyres rather than re treads leave the re treads to your mother in law.

Also in relation to re treads there are two processes to make them: Hot and cold caps. Hot caps - like Bandag caps are made in a similar fashion to re moulds where they are vulcanised at high temp / heat, cold caps are generally a cold process with the cap being vulcanised on at lower temp. (in general most of the retreads from trucks you seen on the road are cold caps......)

Having said all of this, retreads are what most trailers in aust are running, most drivers run cleanskins on steer and possibly drive of prime movers with the cases being used for caps on the trailer, coincidentally next time you are at the lights next to a semi have a look at the trailer tyres, where there is a tyre brand every letter ground off that is a time a tyre has been retreaded. so a Michelin tyre that reads "chelin" has been capped twice, to memory there is no maximum number of times a good case can be capped.

It is possible also to have your own cases re capped or remoulded, if I was going to step into the world of re moulds / re treads this is the way I would be going, a 750R16 case is a cost of about $15 on top of the retread price so a cap might cost $55 plus case plus tube (all caps must be fitted with tubes remoulnds may be fitted tubeless) $25, plus fitting and balance $10 and you are looking at $105 for a $55 tyre (or cap)

Hope this helps
Mick

Tyres

I would not peronally run retreads or remoulds on any vehicle, only trailers. I have seen quite a few new looking remoulds and retreads self destroy. Not a pretty site to the tyre or the guards. Possible with new tyres but not likely. Thats not to mention the ones I have seen put a car on its rrof or into a tree. I had remoulds on a Nissan and they looked and drove like new, I put a new set on for a trip round Aus and gave these to my father in law for his trailer. The tread was not even 1/4 worn and they delaminated on a trip totally destroying the $300 ea at the cheapest place I rang and were up to $350 ea. My advice is go new even if you can not quite get the style of tyre you want. Ring multiple tyre shops and ask them what they have got in the size and style you want.

Your replies are all very helpful guys but to get back to the question...

Has anyone used these mongrel tyres??

I understand the difference between new and remoulded etc but just want to know if anyone has had a set or knows somone who has/does and what they thought of them.

Cheers

About the recaps/retreads letting go on trucks, you'd be surprised how many of the bits you see scattered all over the road are from new tyres, usually because of over/under inflation...........I know first hand, I drove truck for a lot of years  Not any more, it's a warzone out there! Tyres on any heavy vehicle[including 4WD'S]have to work hard, especially on our **** roads!

Cheers Scott

i'd say mick just as a weekend play tyre i don't see any harm in them
but i wouldn't run them at high speeds on the roads 8O

the tread pattern its self looks fine but my main concern would be the sidewalls just never know how old the original tyre was

if they are cheap enough go for it
