I have the back off the instruments at them moment. I thought it might have been the 90deg angle as that is where I could hear the funny noise coming from but everyone kept saying it was the cable.
Luckily I have not removed the cable yet so I will try the angle bit first.
What do you mean fill with silicon???. Wont this stop whatever is in there from turning?

Can you post a pic of the back of the speedo an the 90 bend?
I havn't seen the 90' , I've only repaired the ones where the cable goes straight into the back on the head.
The problems with thaose type of cables is that at the point where it is bent the most, the inner cable is pushed against the casing, causing it to wear away at that piont. Eventually causing it to go oval in shape, which causes the inner to bounce an shudder as it tries to turn. As the speed increases it overcomes this and smooths out, thus it stops bouncing at a certain speed.
But I'd be interested in seeing the 90' type

Well there you go ..... you learn something new every day, I was not aware of the Rangie having a 90deg drive on the speedo .. have come across it on a few early pommie cars .... some Jag`s/ MG`s I think . Toally agree with Reads90 comments about it .

Here is a pic.
Now I pulled it off, cleaned it with some WD40 but it has not made mech diiference if any. There is an end cap on the 90 deg angle which seems to have a slot and allows you to screw it. Is this some kind of adjustment???
When I screwed it out the bouncing was worse but when i screwed it totally in there was still a bit of bouncing.
It seems to me that this angle bit could be stuffed. I will check & maybe replace the cable then decide what to do.

these angle drives use to give a few problems as described above, clicking and bouncing needle, we used to change quite a few. problem is you need 90 degree angle wrists to get to them.
all you need is a stuby philips head screw driver.
and dont fill it with silicon, but rather silicon lube is what was meant i think.
another trick to getting the screws back in is to rest a mirror on the windscreen so you can see what you are doing behind the instrument panel.
Well it looks like I will have to replace mine....and I bet they are not easy to get.
I will try cleaning the cable first but if that doesn't work then back to the angle bit.
stealers should have them sitting on the shelves...we used to go through a few of them so they always had them in stock.Quote:

If this happens, carefuly clean around the mounting position with a solvent such as thinners, etc. Don't get more grease spread around. Clean the plate that has come adrift. Fit the plate and then spread epoxy over it to hold it in place.
If needs be, repack the gear box with fresh grease before cleaning it up.

I am not exactly sure what you are talking about (end plate) but I will have a look. I removed the right angle last night and fitted the cable directly into the speedo. This made a big difference & it only bounces at slow speeds now rather than all the time. I guess it is a combination of right angle & cable that is the problem.
With the right angle removed I could still hear a loud (very load) whirring noise which corresponded with the needle bouncing. COuld this be inside the speedo itself or is it just the cable rubbing on the housing?
