Sounds normal. My series usually comes up a few degrees on hot days never boils though. Does your's boil ?

Shouldn't boil unless there's a problem. Possibilities if it does are blocked radiator (external or internal), faulty thermostat or radiator cap providing the ignition timing and fuel metering are set correctly.

Just out of curiousity you don't have flywire on the grille do you ??
Tha'd cause it to run warmer too as it reduces the airflow. Another culprit is backyardies remove the thermostat when it fails and don't put the restrictor bit back.

Realistically you should be able to cane it in standard trim and not boil it.

Adding extra fans I think is masking the problem rather than fixing it.

My 3.5 in the Stage 1 used to get hot till i got the radiator cleaned (properly with the tanks off @ $90) and that cooled it down a fair bit. The oil still gets hot, which is very common according to a LR Mech mate.

So check whether its the water or oil (my oil will still be hot is water is cool)

kaistuff yours could be a list of things.
I had this problem some time ago, the short story was i
replaced the rad core and fixed the fuel system/regulator(was leaning out)

now just before i fixed it i installed a vdo temp gage to see what was going on.
after the fix, and with a 83 deg C thermostat in she runs around town
on 80deg c and on the h/way at 110 just under 90deg c and if its really warm, like in the 40's 95deg c.

now this is where i would have nodded my head in aggreance with your
    quote Hellspawn.

I used to think that would be the case also. but!
1 week after the fix i got sick of trying to get grass seed out of my new radiator so i installed mesh in front of the rad but behind the grill.
this mesh is finer than fly screen and made out of stainless steel.

heres the strange part, the vdo gage still reads EXACTLY the same temps
in the same conditions as before the mesh????

    pease explain???

The defender one wont fit as it is a completely different shape.
    The disco one may.

Try talking to a Radiator place about it.
Aluminium radiators are the go but $$$.

Yep.. same with the mutant... got flywire behind the grille and makes no difference to water operating temp.

Just put it down to some systems can cope and some don't. Though flywire does slow the air speed down and often wonder about those that lately have been using 70% shadecloth because of the locusts. Would think it would block off even more airflow.

Probably go desert cooler triple pass radiator or get something from another make. BJ40 radiators fit quite well, brotherinlaw has one in his series 3 daihatsu conversion and it never gets above ½ way on the gauge on the beach.

They are a very different shape to a RR radiator though ie narrow and shallow VS the Rangies Wide and deep.

Have a look at Ford AU Twin Thermos, they seem to be what most people add to their radiators to keep them cool. Most of the aftermarket ford AU thermos are about $250

Yeah it'd be a custom swap as I figured there'd be some difference in dimensions however I was thinking more of effeciency. 8)

having the radiator flushed will not get the same result as getting it properly rodded... this is done by removing the tanks and actually clearing the core out...
been through all this with my rangie and eventually went with a h/d core... this has seemed to fix it..
The original core was full of cr@p and was pretty bloked up..
Dont waste your time with thermo fans etc... as said, it is just masking the problem...
a Rover V8 should be able to run all day without getting hot...
Replace your thermostat first...(cheapest).. put the highest % glycol coolant you can find in there...
If this does not fix it... I would recommend talking to a rad bloke.. either rod it or recore...
Buying used radiator is no guarentee it will be much better than the existing
