Id drop the Belt and spin the Alternator and pump and power steer and check for play on all of those, then check the viscus fan for play as well.
Mud will kill your alternator real quick.

I recently had a rumbling niose from front of motor,300tdi after going through some deep water, turned out to be bearings in a/c belt idler and tensioner. About $6 per bearing.Suggest you take both belts off and spin all pulleys by hand and trace niose this way.
well i took belt off and found its the water pump pulley bearings making noise which aint too bad... but... it is leaking coolant one drop every 5 sec so im not sure if fixing bearings will fix that too. I spose i have to take water pump out anyway then i will see.
The water pump isn't a serviceable item, so just replace it. May as well flush the radiator etc while you're at it and replace the coolant. It's all gotta be drained anyway.
Remember that Tdi's require the coolant to be at 50% strength, not 33% that most pre-mixed stuff comes as. Best to buy the concentrate and mix it yourself with de-mineralised water.

Ok getting a new one soon if i can afford it. I ust got my radiator serviced not long ago as it was blocked so ill just need to drain a little. Thanks anyway.
I had this problem with my 300TDi sniperator. It turned out to be the bearing in the tensioner pulley for the aircon belt.
Take the belts off and spin all the pulleys, if one feels like it is running dry thats what the cause of your noise is. The bearings cost stuff all, they are all the same size and any bearing place will have them, not sure on the number.
Is the water pump leaking aorund the shaft?
Check the bearings in all the pullies first, its cheaper. Matt
if the water pump is leaking from the telltail hole this is an indication that the bearing in the WP is on its way out - bearing has too much play, water gets past and comes out of the telltail.

you guys missed the last post on the first page.....its the water pump.
its leaking.
not a hard job.
Started to take water pump out, your right zook not a hard job, well in theary. One bolt in the power steering pump pulley is too tight been trying for 3 hours. done the rest on the water pump exept one which is waiting for steering pump pulley to come off
It's a pity you're that far into it. Normally if I get a situation like that or have a feeling I will, it's amazing what warming the motor up does for undoing tight bolts/studs/nuts.
Exhaust flange bolts are crackers at seizing and some are a problem to get at anyway. Hook the vehicle around the block a few times to warm them 8O they undo with much less effort. Rather do that than risk poking the oxy flame in and around melting who knows what, which normally ends in tears.
How hard would it be to put the bolts back and warm the motor up a bit ? Might be an option to you. Could always go the 3ft long 1in pipe on the rachet handle approach, I'd try heating the motor first as a start easy and work from there.
