    What sort of noise Sniperator?

By the looks of your avatar, you have done a bit of mud plugging, try the alternator bearings

They never like the sloppy stuff.

Don't have a TDi however bearings tend to rumble before they fail if that helps in your diagnosis.

If you could do the work yourself the cost would come down. Water pumps aren't normally that expensive. It's the work involved at $60/hr that inflates the price. If I'm reading the catalogue from FWD's correctly (the new one cat. no. 32), $88ea for water pump incl. the gasket.

Bear in mind it is ALWAYS cheaper for you to front up to a mechanic with everything required and they just do the work than them do the whole job incl. source parts. They mark up parts so they make money on that bit as well as the the physical work which is fair enough but if you can get the parts why pay them to use the telephone at your cost ?

8O Surely it can't be costing you that much to keep a newer diesel going for you to give in. I agree it can be irritating when you get breakdowns regularly, my series gearbox/transfer I would have thrown in anger (if it wasn't so heavy) when it was causing problems. Still it's concerning a newer vehicle and diesel for that matter requires more work than my 30yr old GM powered series. Made on a Friday ?

    Hi Jay
Ive done my own waterpump replacements on the TRYTOO,I dont know if its as bad as a TDI but I rekon you would get a $1000 labour bill on the Trytoo.
    -Remove radiator and hoses
    -Remove timing belt covers
-Remove timing belt, balance shaft belt, and pulleys.
    -Remove thermostat housing
    -Remove waterpump.
Then Refit all of the above in the reverse order hoping that the new pump doesnt leak as you cant test it till its all back together.

Takes almost a day as the japs designed the bloddy thing for people with kids sized hands to work on.

None of this 20min holden waterpump change bisso.

    Hi Andrew

Yeah I know. I dread the day the Mazda askes for the water pump to be replaced. It's not that you can't see it, just there is no physical way of getting any tool near it to undo the bolts (with skin remaining on knuckles on completion) and would almost be quicker to lift the whole lot out out than do in situ. In that case would be a one hour job, if you knew what you were doing.

Wouldn't say the water pump on my series would be a 20min wonder either, would be a radiator out job. Probably still do it in under 30. Pain in the bum either way.

    Hi Jay
Last time I did a waterpump on the 109 van it was 20 mins,as I have plenty of room.I didnt need to remove the radiator, the holden conversion in mine is one of the beter ones Ive seen, the radiator sits flush with the front of the X member with the bottom hose going thru the X member instead of a hole cut in the top with a radiator sitting in it rusting the chassis out like which many have been done.

Don't forget to check out the belt tensioner & alternator.

Your best be is to release the serpentine belt and then turn the pump, alternator & tensioner by hand to see if you can identify which. The other alternative is to run the engine and squirt oil into the suspects to see if the noise changes.

I agree with LHR, Tdi waterpump is straightforward, I did mine a couple of months ago. Remove belts and hoses, viscous coupling, fan shroud, then unbolt water pump, then re-assemble. Maybe 1 - 1 1/2 hours work and normal tools is all you need other than a 32mm spanner to get the viscous coupling off. I bought a cheap rubbish spanner (Made in India) and heated it up with the Oxy to bend a dogleg in it, works a treat now.

300Tdi Water pump (STC1086) will cost you $96.60 (gst inc) for Genuine/OEM from Karcraft, or $62.71 (gst inc) for a reputable copy (probably QH), also from Karcraft.

300Tdi full workshop manual is in the downloads section of this site, if you don't already have it. There's plenty of guys on this forum willing to give you some advice too if you get stuck.

Thanks guys i feel better now. I will take off belt to try and find exactly what it is, it does sound like bearings though.
