Defender 110 MY12 - trailer light comes on when indicating.

    Hi all,

I have noticed that my new Land Rover has a strange thing happen when I indicate right.
The trailer indicator lamp comes on briefly, but only for a split second, once, when I first indicate.

Why would this happen? Could it be a problem with the trailer socket wiring?

    Not towing by the way.

Have you just added the trailer socket, bullbar (with turn indicators) or changed one of the turn indicators.

Normally the trailer socket will illuminate when there is more current being drawn than what it thinks is normal, i.e. you connected a trailer.

Mine did this when the bullbar (with indicators) was added.

So anything that draws more current would cause this.

Sorry just re-read your post a bit better, flashing once is normal from memory. It has been a long time since before I had the bullbar, and I have also changed all the lights (bar the headlights) for LEDs which come with a new relay to fix the issue I mentioned.

If you do a search through here it has been discussed before.

Ah Ok, thanks for the info.

I tried a search, but was on my phone, and it was V tedious.

I guess it is a Defender quirk!

Yep, normal behavior. Have a look at your manual. If a trailer is connected, it should continue to flash in sync with your indicators. If it doesn't, then a glob may be blown on the trailer. Kinda useful, but also kinda confusing at first.

    Mine does that too.
I only noticed it after having a trailer brake controller fitted, so I can't say if it was doing that before. Now it flashes every time I indicate.

If you have a bulbar, check the indicator lights there. The system regards the extra lights on the bar, as a trailer. You may have to change the bulb in the bar. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

That explains something. My Disco used to flash the trailer light thingy. I didn't notice
straight away, but it doesn't anymore. Now I know why. I replaced the roo bar ones
with led's. The system wouldn't know they were there.

    Amazing!

Our 90 does that as well. Flashes once when you turn the indicators on. Its only been doing this since the brake controller was installed. Our 110 doesn't do this but has no brake controller yet. I'll try and remember to pay attention and see if it does this once the brake controller is wired in.

Thanks, I'll check that. Would an LED replacement not be recognized, as is suggested by another poster.
