Clean all the carbon off and look for fine cracks between the valve seats, if you cooked it and the gasket looked ok i would bet the heads gone especially if its the original one.
If it looks ok then only a pressure and hardness test is way to know for sure.

    good reply ^^^^

it would be helpful to know why it was removed and at how many ks

also you'll be able to see more if you clean it thoroughly

Yep, I reckon that'd fail a hardness test.
    It's been bloody hot.

I did the manifold gasket before xmas and there's been a gushing sound since(when starting up). Only bought it in June last year and I wasn't sure If the head had been done so I thought I'd do it anyway. The head gasket looked fine. Been blowing a bit of smoke too (black on startup)

All engines that run Bosch VE pumps blow smoke on start up,the fuel cut off is before the regulator so they start at full throttle causing the smoke. Pat

the simple answer then, seeing that it's done those kms -

and the easiest option, is to just ring Turners and get a new head complete with valves fitted and all the ancillaries (bolts & gaskets etc)

    Land Rover cylinder heads 300TDI, TD5, LDF500160, LDF500170, 200TDI, V8, 2.0TCie Freelander diesel, turbo diesel, M51 BMW RR, 2.5 petrol, 2.25 petrol etc.

    - takes less than a week to arrive, but the dropping $AUD may give you an unpleasant surprise
