    Mechanical failures

I read from time to time of drivers claiming mechanical failures on insurance. What insurance company covers that. I thought insurance covered damage to the vehicle and road service covered just that plus recovery. I have never heard of an insurance co. covering breakdowns. Jim

My understanding is that subsequent mechanical damage is covered by insurance.
For example a work colleague crashed over a high kerb in his Falcon. This damaged the transmission and drove the driveshaft through the diff.
The insurance company paid for the transmission repair and axle repairs.

We had mechanical breakdown insurance on the wifes Subaru, cost $500 a year. I think the criteria was the car had to be less then ten years old and the clock under 100k kms?

Most of these mechanical breakdown insurance (mbi) policies are utter crap, for instance my wife's car has road side assist and mbi.
The starter motor failed and the road assist, got her home.
Rang the insurance company and explained, they said we would have to get to their repairer in Sydney (285klm away).
We explained we lived miles away, they said they could send an assessor to inspect and approve the replacement after we filled in some claim forms which they would post next week sometime. It would take up to a month to get the assessor to us. I contacted Fair trading and the Insurance Ombudsman, fixed the starter myself, and this company no longer exists, seems some people were deported.
Only trust someone like the NRMA or RACQ, wouldn't trust the others esp. those offered by car sales dealers, Regards Frank.
