Snorkels and dust

Hi all. After a discussion in the general forum, noddy suggested i post this here to see what you guys think.

I read in one of the magazines that having a snokel on a vehicle can reduce dust ingress when travelling in convoy. How you ask? Well they reckon that turning the intake on the snorkel 180 degrees to face backwards will reduce, not eliminate, the amount of dust your air filter will have to stop getting into the engine.

I personally think it would work a treat. What do you think? Matt

Well I reckon that is bulldust

This could be a debate. 8)

This along with the idea that a snorkel will put the air intake above the dust. 8O The only way is to lead or stay back.

Snorkels are for keeping water out. Dust happens.

Turning the head around will create a vacuum behind it and should attract more?

How much air is drawn by the engine aspiring?

There is little science applied here just dogma.

The only way to deal with dust is to make sure that your filter is working.

BTW a new filter is not as efficient as one that has had accumulated a little dust along the way.

I reckon the effect would be marginal and not worth losing sleep over.

It will help reduce but not eliminate. In other words, it's a good idea as it will help prolong the life of your filter.

Having the intake facing to the rear will help prevent the larger dust particles from being sucked in but you'll still be relying on the filter to remove the fine stuff.

Either way, it's going to be better than the ram effect of having the intake facing forwards which will scoop up everything.... and even that is better than the original location in the wheel arch!!!!

This should be an interesting one.

My view is that the only benefit of the snorkel is the raised intake for water crossings, which is not insignificant.

Don't believe there is any air ram affect as has been claimed by some of the manufacturers, nor do I think it reduces dust ingress. This is just based on my experience.

Turning the head around may prevent water spray (as seen on some comp vehicles), but don't know that it would cut down the amount of dust. If you are driving through a dust cloud, many metres higher than the vehicle, the engine is drawing the same amount of air and hence dust particles. As said, I think the air ram affect is marginal at best.

Best way to reduce dust ingress is to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

I think a 'sock' does pick up more particles, like a Donaldson, but it has nothing to do with the raised air intake, rather it is just another level of filtration.

Just my views.

Regards

Couldn't agree more .
Personally I am inclined to give them a few points start by elevating the inlet point ... when travelling alone.
Certainly good for water. As for reversing the inlet :?: . Nah ... don't think so 8O
Best , as stated above is to stay well back and enjoy the scenery.

Cheers

A simple test is to open the air box

It's a bit like the biblical plague:

Locusts, Gravel, Water, toads and shrubbery and the dust is in the filter

Hopefully everything else is macerated in the turbo and I would not want to go there 8O

Get a Finer Filter Filter for your snorkel ram 8)

Simple and effective way of reducing if not stopping all the dust.

BTW, i always run my snorkle ram backwards offroad, as i feel it gets less dust as well as reducing the amount of sticks and leaves that make there way down the ram.

Check your air cleaners as i emptied a handfull of crap form the bottom a while ago ops:

Other advantage of the Snorkel is, you can open up the airbox after each trip and have enough bugs as live bait when you go fishing.
So in effect the snorkle is a apparatus to stop water getting in and it also has the opposite effect in allowing you to catch Fish....

Hey then after you catch a fish you can cook it on your exhaust manifold and then use the bonnet as the plate.

Hey... a Defender is a multipurpose tool.....
You can get to the location, Catch the bait, Catch the Fish and cook the fish and you dont need anthing else, just the 4WD.... the fishing rod could be made from a UHF antenna and a fishing line made from some speaker wire (stereo is useless in a fender) Hook could be from a Circlip that you broke trying to fix the front hubs....

Mmmm its late...
