			CDL - Old Rangie

Is the CDL on an old Rangie any different to the CDL on a new Disco?
I ask this because normally in the Disco when we hit Low Range offroad I drive with the CDL always engaged but I noticed a warning label on the Rangie not to do this but only engage CDL after you lose traction. Will I damage it driving with CDL on? I would rather have it engaged before I get into trouble.

I believe that as long as the surface is loose enough to prevent wind up , then you can use the CDL. However I used to only engage mine whenI could see it was sloppy, or really steep hills, or when wheelspin looked likely. I would't engage mine along a normal bush track or forestry track.
Spinning wheels without CDL engaged is death, as the cross shafts chew into the bronze bushes the star gears ride in.

I think if you are in a situation where you need to engage low then there should be enough opportunity for wheel slip to occur eliminating wind up.
If the surface is reasonably loose then you shouldn't have any problems with wind up either. I think most bush track will have enough loose surfaces to not cause any problems.
I was/am pretty much the same as you engage CDL when I hit the dirt (its only the same as 4WD high) and after 450000km my old rangie hadn't had any problems.

Thanks all, I will just treat the CDL as I do for the Disco & leave it on for Low range work.
