    DISCOVERY SERIES 2 2004 TD5 AUTO - transmission slap

Hi - My disco has done 6000 gentle Ks and is developing transmisson slap (if thats the technical term). I have to be careful when accelerating and decelerating to aviod the clunk. Is this normal for Discos? Thanks Pep

    Pep welcome.

    I presume that it is not a 1994 but a 2004

Backlash is usually experienced by the latter ages as for the later models some here may be able to help.

BTW where are you located Pep?

    BTW
Thanks - Yes 2005. Brisbane. The vehicle is under warranty so I will be seeking a fix. However, I am trying to find out whats normal for 2004 Discos. The demo model I drove for a few days was fine and mine did not start the slap until about 5000 Ks.

1st off welcome to the site!

secondly, i cant imagine any legitimate reason why a almost new auto would have slap without there being something amiss. i agree you should be off to see the stealer asap.

Get it to a dealer. My DII had slap at 35K and Alto adjusted the entire driveline under warranty. Massive job and very necessary.

Mine does it, is this a BIG problem!

    HI all,

My '95 Disco Tdi ZF auto (230000K's) tends to clunk a little going into reverse and sometimes clunks softly when lifting off the throttle suddenly.

The auto specialist rubbed his hands when he saw me and suggested a $1500-$2000 fix. Something about input/output shaft wear in the transfer box etc. Seemed to be a common prob!

I think I can live with it for now.

A mate has a V8 disco that does the same at 130000k's.

I just hope I am not doing further damage!

    Cheers

    hi
What you need is a service on the outo box to adjust the bands and change the oil this is verry important on a auto a manual dose not need this service

Autos don't have bands anymore that went out in the 80's early 90's all boxes now are based on the original ZF design of clutch packs and sprag clutches no real adjustment on modern autos, some are sealed for life. Even Falcons don't have dip stick any more.

your 1995 disco should have the later modified transfer case with the longer splines and drilled gear from new, id be looking at the A frame ball joint on the rear diff, your transfer case "should" be ok.
    Cheers
