Td5 temp sender piggyback? - VDO gauge

    Hi guys,

I've got a VDO water temp gauge to install in my Td5 D2, just wondering if anyone had had any luck piggy-backing onto the factory sender? I want to try and avoid adding a second sender if I can (don't want to dump the coolant again).

Delving into my memory , AFAIK VDO gauges often have a different resistance range than OEM.
I suggest that you map the resistance on your OEM sender by taking a cold reading then a hot reading and see how that matches the specs of the VDO.
Usually OEM temp senders are about <300 Ohms at 82C upwards.
Do VDO supply a resistance vs temp map?

Looks like a RAVE page with the TD5 values.
The other thing to be wary of would be that the ECU sends a voltage of 5V to the sensor and measures the return voltage to define the temperature.
Hopefully the VDO piggybacking would not disrupt this but you would have to check before and after with a Nanocom.

Thanks for the answer Phillip, I had thought I'd responded but it appears the post did not load.

I've chosen to purchase a VDO sender, and will be making a special mounting block to go between the head and factory outlet for it. It is easier to play on the mill for a little while than open a can of worms with factory gear!

    Thanks anyway
