"Straps" are mostly at wholesale petrol depots and are no more than shielded steel cable attached to a steel post buried in the ground.

For some reason filling a car is different to any other vehicle. All aircraft and bulk fuel tankers need to be earthed prior to filling for the reason of stored static electricity.

The needing the drum on the ground to be earthed is a bit much. So has anyone asked these people how you get a 60L drum let alone a 44gal back into the ute after filling it on the ground without upsetting their OH&S guidelines ? OH&S states maximum 25kg lift by anyone, so what do you do ? No one seems to be able to answer that question.

Geez if they are that worried use your booster cable to earth the drum to the bowser and leave the drum in the ute. What's the difference ?

I reasonably regularly fill HS both tanks (110L) plus a 60L thinners drum in back and I've been chipped once about filling the drum in the back.

they only get upset if they see you doing it.

diesel is not as bad as petrol.......it is more like kerosene.

it needs to be at a higher temp than petrol to vapourise.
fuel doesnt burn....its the vapours that ignite and burn.

no fuel is considered safe inside a vehicle.
diesel is safer than petrol but there are always dangers.

not to mention if it should ever leak you will never get the smell out.

I am just about to get a long Ranger Automotive tank installed. I was lucky enough to pick up a 2nd hand one from Ritters so it comes with warrant & all.

The LRA tanks are 150l not 140l so you are getting the equivelent of 3 jerry's. It does not sound like much but when you are doing a big trip I reckon it can make a huge difference. We are going across the Simpson again in June. Just to be on the safe side I like to carry about 200l of fuel accross (never used more than 170l vut you never know). So the LR fuel tanks means the difference between carrying 6 jerry's (what I did last year and just rediculous) and 3 jerry's.

Now to the funny story.

On the way accross the Simpson last year we run into a group of Land Rovers. In the group there is a Rangie which sounded mildly hot (worked motor). On the roof he had a full length rack and on that was a stainless tank which covered the rack and sat about 200mm high...........this was the petrol tank. 8O 8O 8O

I put them on the front of the bullbar on a series II and smacked it into a creek bank in the NT, and it was raining super!

I guess if you have a long ranger and jerry cans, perferably on the roof rack, you're on a winner. I hate stressing about fuel. I stopped resetting the odometer, but Disco guages read half a tank when there's only about 35% left (Go figure) so you get 300-400 out of half a tank and you think Unreal! I'm getting gtreat economy on this trip, then it drops like a rock for the last hundred k!

I secretly knew the answer to this thread was to spend more money.

Anybody need a corporate video?

The flash point of diesel is around 45deg C whereas petrol is around -40deg C.

Ok, while we are on the topic of tanks, I just picked up a 2nd hand Long Range Automotive tank for my Disco.

The tank is from a TD5 and I have a V8 but according to LRA all the tanks are identical. BUT I think it would be a good idea to give it a thourough clean before installing it. Dont want any stinking, cheap diesel muck messing up my nice refined petrol injectors.

Someone recommended getting it professionally flushed but I can't find anyone who does it and after speaking with LRA they just said to rinse it out with a bit of petrol and it will be fine.

Any comments?

Earthing at the pumps

Perhaps the hoses at the pumps are actually conductive rubber (static dissapative material), thus effectively earthing the car if the nozzle is in contact with the metal filler. This would also prevent any static build up due to liquid flow in the hose.
Can any one confirm this for sure :?:
