300 tdi tweaking egt question
Hi All!
I was doing some fip tweaking of smoke screw and boost compensator, but NOT maximum fuel delivery screw. That's factory standard.
Now is it possible to exceed 700 C with these two adjustments? I was under impression that you can. But I read a procedure document downloaded from somewhere where it states that only when you start playing with maximum fuel delivery screw you have to start worriying about egts.
You taughts?

tuning 300 tdi fuel pump notes
The best tuning notes for 300 Tdi I found were done by Ian at thermo guard.
ThermoGuard Instruments, or if not there a bit of research on the web. Let me know if you can't find i have a copy on my home computer, ( working today
sort of ), and can send by email. Ian has has done a fantastic job of writing the guidance notes, very suitable for those of us who aren't diesel experts.
You can still over fuel the engine during acceleration, or long hills if you adjust the diaphragm etc. But the best thing to do is fit the EGT gauge and follow Ians recommendation, they worked for me , I'm at the stage where I need to adjust the maximum fuel setting. I have the VGT and upgraded intercooler which has made big difference to the drivability of the TDi adjusting only the diaphragm etc. That shows there's extra fuel there available to burn without adjusting the maximum fuel setting. I can hold 100 km/hr up almost any highway hill in top gear, and keep up with the traffic etc. Very noticeable drop in EGTs with the VNT and bigger intercooler ( APT Fab)- simmo

Thanks for the input simmo. Those were my taughts as well about overfueling with diapraghm. I have egt and i can push mine over 700 if I want to and create clouds of black smoke. I prefer to stay careful on the pedal, knowing that there is a bit more grunt if I really need it.
I was just bit suprised that this was mentioned about egt gauge only when increasing max fuel screw. It can potentially get someone in lot of grief I reckon.
I know i need more air to burn extra fuel effectivelly. But I'm leaving it as is. Can't justify the coin! Plus mine is 370k engine that's not in it's prime. So not worth pushing that much.

APT Intercooler.
I think if you shop around you can get a bigger intercooler, that will help for not much money. I think I paid $ 650 for my APT Fabrication one in Brisbane, and made some adjustments and got improved turbo response and power. I had to use one that would fit in the original spot. If you don't have AC, you can buy any intercooler from the wreckers and fit that. Occasionally you see one from Allisport or APT second hand for about $350.

Soudns good, but maybe in the future. For now, I just want to remove centre muffler, and if there is no excessive drone, that will be it.

center muffler removal
I'd like to hear how that goes, I almost bought the center muffler replacement pipe , but slow delivery meant I had gone away before it arrived.
I have a disco "Q" transfer case to fit as well, maybe some sound insulation ( after 15 years?
, so I'm trying not to have more noise. cheer simmo

From what I remeber in discovery you can't make out any difference in noise with Q xfer case. I read it on the forum here a while ago. But it can't hurt! Apparently if you remove just centre muffler and leave resonator there is no or verry little drone. But I guess that varies from case to case. We'll see once I do mine.
