That's the one.
Why LR chose to use a plug that requires a torx I don't know 8O . Cost me about $20.
Vlad maybe this can find its way into your treasure trove as it is a handy tip.

Unless you are using some one elses so no issue.
Use it every 20,000km.
What is the cost of the fluid each time $30?

I bought a torx t55 socket on the weekend to change the gearbox oil. However, the socket doesn't fit between the propshaft and the lower plug. Any ideas? Thanks![]()

Slightly OT, but a Q for the Guru's.
Has the R380 box always used a torx plug in the filler?
The reason I ask is that a friend bought one of the first Defender traybacks (new) and when he took it in for its first service was told that "some clown had put atf fluid in the gearbox, buts its ok, we changed it to 90"
About a month later the gearbox expired.
In about 1993 another friend in Emerald bought a Defender crew cab (new, from Melbourne) and had to take it over to Mackay for its first major service. Was told an identical story to the one above, result it didnt even make it back to Emerald.
They both had a battle with L/R re warranty issue, I think the first one had a recon. box fitted, the second one new.
I have wondered does the thick oil cause the oil pump to fail resulting in destruction of the gearbox.
It may be logical to require a torx key to access the oil filler as an alert that it does not take normal gear oil. Perhaps it was not always so.
My '97 tdi Disco R380 has run happily on atf111 for nearly 200k.km.
