    Coolant temp: riddle me this??

    1986 range rover
D1 serpentine belt 3.9L pinned liners.
    clutch fan
    D1 rad / d1 fan shroud
    rr temp sender and cluster.

normally engine coolant temp on my factory gauge used to hover around 1/3, worked hard in low range it would go up to 1/2, thats about it. Has been doing this the last 5 years no issues.

This weekend doing a big climb in low range it got to 3/4 and blew a bit of steam out the overflow, not much, not visable from under the car without actually looking at the end of the overflow tube.
also found out my clutch fan had only just started to rub the shroud, must have been on that climb and could have possibly contributed to it getting hotter than usual this time.

Now the kicker; after reaching flat ground and 5-10 mins driving to cool it down, it now runs cooler than it ever has before!

before it was on or just over 1/3, now it sits smack on 1/4.
Sat on 1/4 the 100km home, only rising to about 1/3 on longer hills so i assume the gauge is still functioning. Will go back to rest on shut off etc.
Not imagining it as being a rangie one eye is always on the temp gauge ( the other on the fuel gauge!)

I know i shouldnt be complaining about a rover running cooler than usual but i'm trying to work out why? nothing has changed, only thing i can possibly think of, which shouldn;t happen but, getting a little bit hot has possibly jammed thermostat open, or maybe it was never opening fully and now it is?

anyone got any ideas? not that its a major issue, but as its slightly odd i'm all ears!

One of my P38s had the exact same symptoms. Replacing the thermostat sorted that out.

I can't explain the overheating but maybe if the thermostat is sticking, it stuck closed for a while....just a guess though.

It's easy & cheap enough to replace so I think I'd be looking there first anyway.

Yep I think I'll do thermostat, coolant flush, clean the rad and replace the viscous coupling, just a precautionary measure.
I'm not too worried about it overheating as it didn't get super hot and it was working hard. more so puzzled it now runs cooler!

The thermostat at have locked open or your then to fan is sticking when it's running at speed from the drag from the fan pullin it forward on the bearing
