it aint worth the heartache
i investergated it and just went and bought another...
OK, ive done it in Holdens, Fords, Volvo's and Mini's
But never a Landy.
My Old man has a 93 Disco V8, nice rig but as he is getting old and he drives 2 manual vehicles it is hard for him to work out what is what.....
So i thought i'd help him convert his E'manual to a Auto.
1st question. are the Transfers the same?? or do i need a complete auto, transfer, crossmember, tail shafts, ect.
Who has converted one and what did it cost you?
I'll sell his Manual box off later on to recoup some of the $$
Will Rangi ones fit? or does it have to be a Disco?
Regards
Steve

I tend to agree, but it cost him $5500, so spending a couple wont hurt..
In the last couple of months one of the British Land Rover magazines had a 3 page article with pictures on doing a manual-to-auto conversion on a disco 1. Trouble is, since I've got a manual, I threw it out (oops). I had a quick look on their respective websites, but there was no joy with back issue headings. ( IF ANYBODY READING THIS HAS BACK ISSUES OF THOSE MAGS< HAVE A LOOK AND SEE IF YOU CAN FIND IT ) As far as I can recall, there weren't too many hassles, but with 93 disco's getting a bit long in the tooth, I tend to agree with incisor - trade the manual for an auto - there are plenty around especially V8, or buy the old man a present - D2!
ive got some floating around.....which mag was it?
i can go check if i know what im looking for...
Doing an auto conversion on your Disco isn't too difficult, just fiddly.
I'm almost finished moine on my old 83 Rangie. the reason I did so because i had the ZF auto ready to go and autos are just soo much better in many ways (the manual purists may dissagree, but I don't care)
The LT230 will bolt straight up to your auto (did an LT230 conversion on Aquarangie a couple of years back and the transfer was from a VM diesel Rangie, manual LT77 pile of crap!!).Things like cooler lines, shifter and the kickdown cable are the problems, but since the Discos already came out with an auto option (unlike the old Rangies in 83 which were still all-manual LT95 4 speeds at the time) the job is a bit easier.
But I have to agree with Incisor here, is the vehicle worth it?? I saw a 94 Disco auto V8 (3.9) for $7K in the trading post with less than 200K on it in Brissie.
I did mine for about $1K all up but I had some unexpected hurdles such as outpuit spud shafts, etc...
Good luck if you decide to do it, if not good luck with finding a replacenment

Easy as:
buy auto with all fittings pipes fasteners.
Price range from 850-1800 depending on year and where you get it.
can be done over weekend no time to stop but better over week.
Need time for the odd scotch

I agree, but mine has taken 4 weekends to finish 8OOriginally posted by HSVRangie

I know I said mabe better off upgrading, but thinking about it pending on how you go about it may be possible within the economical scale of things
Like I said, mine was a bit more challenging due to the fact there was NO auto option on my model Rangie at the time (the BW/C4 ones as you know were local conversions, not LR options).
Yes, a carton of Qld's finest or scotch is a good soother when you get the ****s with someting![]()

I'll look into the conversion...
AFAIK, it's all fairly easy. The only thing I'd say is that if you get a second hand unit, make sure that there's no crud in the torque converter that will then go and clog the box.
The transfer box is the same but I'm not sure about the oil cooler.
Mark.
