Within a few minutes of starting the engine the voltage at the battery terminals should be 13.9-14.5 volts with no headlights or accessories on, because an alternator must charge at 14.5 volts to charge a 12 volt battery.
If you only have 12.9 volts with the engine running the battery will never charge. There is something wrong with your alternator or the charging circuit.
A battery is only an energy storage device. Once the engine starts the car electrical system relies on the alternator to run everything and maintain the battery.
As others have suggested maybe you have not connected the exciter which goes through the dash bulb,. If the dash light goes on at ign turn on and off while running then generally your earths are OK, as the bulb measures the difference in electricity between the alternator and the battery.
The most likely explanation is a damaged alternator. [/b][/quote]
