Clutch Vacuum Booster - Hydraulic Tube Size Problems

I'm trying to fit a vacuum booster to the clutch in my 110 County. I have a new VH44 booster and thought it would be fairly simple to fit. Silly me.

It looks like the metal hydraulic tubing (the Bundy tube) used for the clutch is 1/4 inch. The VH44 (and all of my spare fittings) is set up for 3/16 tubing, which is used for all of the brake lines on the car.

My local parts guy reckons 1/4 inch is very unusual and it would probably be easier to just replace the whole of the tubing with 3/16. I'd be a bit concerned about doing this. For one thing, it seems obvious that the bigger tubing carries considerably more fluid volume and I can't help feeling that Land Rover did this for a reason.

Another problem is that the rubber brake line that goes from the metal brake tube to the slave cylinder would need to be replaced, so I'd have to find one the right length. Finally, I'd also need to find adapters to connect the smaller tube to both the slave and master cylinders. I suppose I could replace the slave and master cylinders with 3/16 compatible versions, but that would be a bit of a pain.

So, can anyone make any helpful suggestions (other than some sort of self harm)?

I'd like to know whether anyone knows of a supplier if 1/4 inch bundy tube and fittings, preferably in Brisbane. Also, if I have to go to 3/16, will I be able to find the adapters to my existing rubber clutch hose and master cylinder? Will the existing slave and master cylinders still function with the smaller tubing?

I case you're wondering, my better half drives the car more than me and has a real problem in traffic with the truck clutch. So I pretty much have to do this.

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Dave.

I vaguely recall seeing a VH44 fitted to an EH Holden with 1/4 inch pipework. In any case, you might be better speaking with a specialist who may have suitable fittings in stock. These guys are my local experts at older brake systems and should be able to help you with information and parts.

Hi Dave, I guess it depends on where you mount the VH44, but why not just use a 3/16 to 1/4 adaptor on both sides rather than replace the lines. Can't see any problems doing that. The simpler the better!!

I have rolls of 1/4 pipe here use lots of it on older cars. Some vh44 use 1/4 others use 3/16 there's no issue steping it down to 3/16 pipe at all.

Thanks mate. I've found a supplier of the 1/4 pipe but still no luck with the reducers and joiners. I have a fittings supplier chasing them for me, so hopefully I'll have a result soon.

    clutch booster

What i did to my land rover county to make the clutch light is install a vh44d remote booster, this booster bore cylinder size 7/8 the same as the clutch master cylinder and the slave cylinder,if you put the standard vh44 for example the cheap ones with the 5/16 bore size from ebay it wont work, the vh44d is not cheap and can cost as much as $400+,if you have a PBR vh44 booster it can be modified by ATAP in Derrimut Victoria to the same bore as the master and slave fitted to you land rover, you will have to get the inlet and outlet adapter to fit on the booster if your pipes are not 1/4inch, the vacuum i put a T piece into the brake vacuum hose and connect that to the remote booster. My clutch pedal is now half the battle to press in which is important when four wheel driving.

you can buy step down adaptors, but if you've got the working tools for it you can stretch the 1/4 taper the 3/16 slide them together and solder the joint then wrap a sleeve around that and solder that to give the joint strength.

    DONT do this for brakes.

You are in Brisbane. Go to IFS (Industrial Fitting Sales) at Rocklea and take your bits with you. They will fit you with suitable joiners in an augenblick.
