timing belt change on a 1995 series 1 discovery tdi

Hi. I am new to this forum. My husband ,daughter and I are heading north for a month. We have a 1995 discovery tdi that goes well.
We purchased it 2 years ago and it had had many modifications done to it. However we hear that the timing belt needs changing reguarly. Apparently the original timing belt had probs. How do we know that this has been rectified. I think it had but am unsure. Also any hints on chnging the belt. My husband is pretty handy and wants to give it a go. However he needs some good advice on what he should and should not do. Anything to look out for? Also any other things we should check or take as sparesfor our trip? We will not really be of road but will travel about 7000 kms, and be towing an old Jayco swan camper trailer.
Our car has done about 180,000kms now and we have done about 50,000 0f those. I really appreciate any advice. Thankyou for your tme.
    Regards lanise

    hi lanise...welcome to aulro.

    me personally...i would change it.

it should be done at around 80 to 100 thousand kms....if it was done at 80
    it is about due...

if it wasn't done at all, you have been lucky...

for the safety factor of one less thing to go wrong while touring....if you decide to do it...dont leave it till the last minute before your trip...do it as soon as possible so if any other problems arise from the repair from moving and adjusting bits to get to the belt, you will have the time and the means to rectify them.

i take it when you bought your disco you didn't get any service or repair history, so my advice is pretty much for your own peace of mind.

    good luck..and keep us informed.

I cannot answer your question specifically but if you do a search of 'timing belt 'posts you should find what you need.

    IMO... It's a no-brainer, change it!

With the correct tools, it's quite an easy job to do and not too expensive (just get hold of the 300TDi manual which will detail the procedure). However, if the belt lets go, it could be a costly recovery and repair!!!!

Change it before you go. The fact that you have done lotts of miles since you got without failure probably means that your car has been retro fitted with the Landrover fixes to stop this problem. Take it somewhere that knows whats required, replace the belt and do the upgrades if needed or you may spoil your trip with engine failure and damage. Worst case cost even it it needs the full upgrade is $700 if you pay someone to do it. It's not a hard job to do yourself but you do need some special tools to get the injector pump timing correct and some pullers to get it a part. The belt it's self is cheap like $60 but the upgraded crankshaft gear, idler and pump bracket add a $200+ more if you need them.

Hi lanise, buy a copy of the RAVE CD from the sites emporium, its cheaper than a paper copy of the manual, and far better in my opinion. You just flick through it on a computer and find the pages you need, there will be detailed step by step instructions and detailed diagrams. With this you should be fine. The CD will also tell you what tools you need. Matt

If you have a quick look on the WWW then you will be able to find a copy of the 300TDi Overhaul Manual for download (it's a .PDF).

    Welcome Lanise,

This is a comprehensive description of the procedure:

    http://www.difflock.com/servicing/300tdi-t...elt/index.shtml

Note that some of the early models 95 to about 98 suffered from premature wear due to misalignment of some of the components in the timing assembly and cover. Land Rover supplied modifications (depending on the model) to rectify this fault. This issue is also described here.

    Some were ok.

I had a modification installed after my last change. 20% of the belt width had worn away after 60,000 km.

    Trust this helps.

    the dreaded timimg belt, arrrrrgh....

    Lanise,

Cheers to you and yours and hope the trip goes well. We had a crack at timing belt changes/upgrades some time back and successfully. Have a look at the AULRO magazines/newsletters, (? Ed#3), and in tech talk, we sort of describe the methods. You'll need some timing pins (search this site for the details) to set up the pump timing and a very big extension bar (unless the Man is sooooo strong) for the crank pulley.

Take plenty of pics to help with reassembly.

But it's sure not rocket science.

I'd investigate some uprated springing and shocks if you intended a fair load in vehicle and trailer combination.

    HTH
