    Brake Pad Sensors

    Here is something I am not 100% familiar with, so if it sounds stupid please laugh now.
    Are the brake pads on a 1996 Discovery TDI auto fitted with wear sensors?
    Why you may ask because I need new pads, the manual says the dashboard brake light is the indicator ie red something wrong when lit up and so on,( now I know what Vlad was talking about, I thought the sensors were for RR vehicles only) The place I am going to buy them from says there are two types, sensor and non sensor.
    Aside from pulling the wheels off and physically checking is there any other indicators, I can see the ABS wire going into the rear of each hub but thats about it.

    On a range Rover they are on the right hand (drivers side) wheels only.
    You can easily see the wires . The connector sits horizontally on top of the disc but slightly back. You should be able to see by turning on right lock.

    Either way... It doesn't matter.

    If you buy the ones with the sensors but don't have the wiring on the truck, just cut the cable off the pad.

    If you buy the ones without and you've got the wiring in place, just cable tie the connector back.

    All it is, is a couple of wires moulded into the pad. When the pad has worn, the wires then complete a circuit (making the dash light come on) using the surface of the brake disk.

    Brake pad sensors

    The very early Discos to about 1992 had wear sensors but as a cost cutting measure these were discontinued, so a 1996 is not fitted with sensors.

    and it used to be the pads without the sensors that would wear first....

    I got some profile diagrams of the two pads, the sensor and non sensor are different profiles, thanks Andy but cutting off the wire wouldn;t work anyway.
    It sounds like Alan is right, from what I can almost see without taking the wheel off.
    While i'm here , has anyone used maxistop brake pads?
