Low Compression V8 in 110 - Opinions Appreciated

    Hi all,

Does anybody know how the low compression (8.13:1) V8 goes in a 110? My current high compression (9.35:1) motor needs some work, but I can't have the car off the road for too long, and I am also on a tight budget. I have a low compression motor out of an early Discovery that I was thinking of swapping in (I would simply renew the camshaft, lifters, bearings and timing chain), but I am concerned that the drop in compression won't do me any favours considering that I am running on LPG.

On a side note - I also have 2 low compression motors out of Rover SD1 sedans. Would there be any advantage in using one of these motors instead of the early Discovery motor?

    Thank you,

    Edward

I think it will depend on what you have done to the high compression motor.

If it is an 81-85 leaded emission motor with the air pump, and it has the original (bad) camshaft then IMHO you will notice little difference.

If you have changed the cam for an earlier one then you may notice some drop of in performance but not much.

In something heavy and non aero like a 110 , I would put an early non emission 3.5 cam in, rather than the sometimes favoured 3.5 injection cam.

IMHO a Disco motor would be far superior than an SD1 motor as there were several major improvements such as bigger main bearing caps, more bracing across the valley, better valves and so on.

Thank you PhillipA for your opinion.

My current motor has the Range Rover pre-pollution camshaft which I am happy with - I would happily install the same type in the low compression motor. My current motor does not have any of the emission gear on it.
