If it's the thin wire, I'd say follow the wiring diagram. I would probably run it back to the solenoid pack, but not the battery. You could probably get away with going from the motor to a chassis ground, if you really needed to.
Ready to re fit my winch and while looking at the wiring diagram i see a ground wire from winch motor to solenoid pack, my winch was just using the bolts to winch cradle/chassis as the ground.
Should i be fitting a ground wire or even neg back to battery ?

Looks like 1 or more of the ingram 9557 solenoids have died, wont replace as i can get a single 500A replacement for about the same cost - looks like it wont be in for the weekend.
