    Hub seal confusion query

    Hi all! G'day to you!
    The other day I went round to replacing the front inner hub seal (where the hub faces the stub axle). It's the second that's been leaking over the years. Well, I took off the hub, took out the bearings and all that stuff, cleaned it and put it well together again.
    Now, when looking at the seal (original LR repalcement item) it says clearly on the side with the sealing lip "this side to stub axle" (i.e. outwards) whereas the Haynes Manual as well as the LR repair manual (RAVE) state "make sure that the sealing lip is facing inwards" (i.e. towards the bearing).
    Whilst I have to admit to being somewhat confused I still know the origins of my vehicle are in the British Empire where such obvious discrepancies normally are tolerated by the public. But I am still looking for the correct way to do it, though.
    Hope that some of you mates will enlighten me...
    Oh yes, I forgot, it's a Disco I, 1995 model.

    yeah, I hate that too.
    Which seal model # ?
    I'm assuming an FTC4785, so the dust seal lip faces outwards, to contact the radius on the stub axle.
    The hollow section goes towards the bearings.
    Or to put it another way, the side with all the numbers and instructions goes away from the bearings, towards the stub axle.

    Have I confused you yet ? :wink:

    Yes, you are correct in your assumption. And I fitted it the same way you did. To make things worse, the first time I had to change the seal it was fitted the other way round, i.e. the lip facing inwards. And that seal was fitted at Solihull... wouldn't be the first time they fitted things incorrectly, though!

    The genuine workshop manual for Defenders also tells you to put the seals in the wrong way. Also shows the main crankshaft retaining bolt as being a LH thread, which it most certainly isn't. It seems that legendary Landrover quality control extends to the workshop manuals too!
