    ELCB. Intermittant tripping problem

Not sure where to put this but Mods will move if wrong forum.
The ELCB on our home swichboard has started tripping for no reason.
May be once a day , may be one in two days.
The thing is once it trips it can be reset and stays there.
If a circuit is crook and it trips then usually one has to turn off the various power points untill the faulty one is found before the ELCB can be reset.
Not in this case. It can be reset no problem.
Can it be a faulty ELCB that needs replacing?

    Its on two power circuits.
We have two fridges and a freezer. One fridge is out on the verandah and that would be the one I suspect as well, but I cant understand why I can reset it. If the fridge was faulty I would expect the ELCB to keep tripping untill I unplugged the faulty item.

I've encountered a similar problem with dust build-up on the back of a laundry power point that in damp weather leaks sufficient current to trip the breaker, yet can be reset immediately. That took a while to track-down.

    Now thats a thought.
The outside fridge is plugged into one side of a double point.
I wonder if dust is in there.
I will pull the point off , give it a clean then fit a dummy plug into the unused outlet and see if that makes a difference.

Do yourself a favour & get one RCD for each circuit , fault finding will be much easier, & the first time you have to get a sparky in to find a problem you will have recouped the cost .
Also not relevant in this case as you can reset straight away , but in future it is better to unplug each appliance on the circuit rather than switch off , when trying to find the culprit .

I Think I have found the culprit.

The fridge on the veranda and the Tuckerbox freezer are the oldest as we bought them up here from the coast 16 yrs ago.
I started by running a long lead up from the shed and plugging the fridge into it for a couple of days.

    The RCD inside still tripped.
Next a double adapter and a lead through the window to the Tuckerbox for a couple of days.

    The RCD inside still tripped.
Next another double adapter and lead to the GE Icemaker side by side we bought new when we built here 16 years ago.
After a day it tripped the RCD in the shed.

    Looks like its the culprit.

Next I hooked the two others back to their respective sockets and ran a lead inside the house to a socket on the other circuit.
Now both these circuits are connected via MCB,s to the same 4 pole RCD but interestingly its been hooked up for two days now and has not tripped it.
I cant leave a lead duct taped to the floor for ever so I guess its into the roof space and swap the wiring for the GE,s power point to the other side of the RCD.
As dero suggested, even better still, get two new double pole RCD,s, one for each circuit.

I recall an amusing incident from Malaysia .
I was driving into my yard to witness an extraordinary scene.
My maid was running in circles screaming and about 4chinese blokes were also arguing loudly.
Turns out my elcb had triggered a few times. I had called Mr Low the high commission contractor who had sent his lowest talent gorilla who had bridged the breaker with a nail.
Coincidentally a Malayan electric commission bloke had been called as they thought it was a fault outside. He saw the nail so wanted a bribe.
Just then the fridge blew up, hence the maid running in circles.

The fault was the fan in the fridge, which only goes on when the compressor operates.
I suggest that this may also be your problem,a failing fan.

    Regards Philip A
