Which oils for RR?

I'm about to do the oil changes in my 1987 RR which has a 3.9 EFI, on gas, with a 5spd manual, LT230 transfer.

I'd like to use the same oil in the gearbox and diffs. But which oil.

Options so far are; engine oil with Moreys, 80/90 EPW gear oil, Castrol Multitrax 75/90 (works great in Alfa transaxles), automatic trans fluid, banana skins, etc.

My current thinking for the swivle pins is straight Moreys or Lucas oil stabilisor.

Any comments?

PS. I use 20/50 in the engine, usually Valvoline when its on special.

Valvoline is what I used to put in my 3.9 too...

Diffs & Transfer - EP90.
Main gearbox - MTF94.

Mind you, each reply will probably have a different recommendation.

I recently changed all my lube in my 1987 RR - now with 300 TDI / ZF Auto and 24 spline axels.

I used :

Castrol RX 15/40 oil in the motor - used this also in the V8 as it has a good detergent

Castrol EPX 80/90 in the axels and the transfer

Castrol Dexron III in the Auto ( not applicable in your case )

for the front swivels I used the one-shot grease - as the later axels require this and is best if our swivels are a bit worn in the earlier axels, as the the thicker grease does not run out as easy as the EP90.

The workshop manual says the transfer case and auto transmission should both have ATF Dexron IID.

Is it common to put the high pressure gear oil (EPX 80/90) in the transfer case instead of Transmission fluid. I've heard other people mention it

Dont use a GL4 type oil in T/Case USE GL5. (LT230)

5 speed was orignaly speced at ATF but has since been changed to MTF 94 far better for the box.

my owners manual from the Disco I used for my conversion (1997 Disco TDI with ZF Auto) says EP80/90 for the transfer gearbox.

we are talking about a LT230 as in the earlier (pre 1989 BW transfer)?

I have also checked the RAVE disc - I bought from here THX to the Emporium, and it also says EP80/90 for the LT230.

I now see you have a 1994 RRC with the BW transfer - any yes the ATF is correct for that transfer gearbox.

Sorry if I caused any confusion - my RR is more of a Strange Rover ReDiscovery model

Yes, definitely have the 94/95 RR with ZF auto and BW transfer.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Don't bother with ATF in the gear/transfer boxes (unless of course if it's an auto....), you might as well just p1ss into them and save the money for when you have to re-build them. ATF is just too thin to lubricate properly and IMO the main cause for the reliability issues the manual boxes have had.

MTF 94 or a fully synthetic engine oil is what's needed.
