Yep... You spied correct. I've got audio quality connections & cable running from the battery box to the rear of the truck where I have another fuse & distribution box. The distribution box uses those gold plated terminal blocks that you mentioned with the hex grub screws.
The original reason for fitting the gold connectors was because I used to have a kick arse sound system fitted in the rear (Quality & Volume!!!).... I had to rip it all out to kit the truck out for overlanding.
The WD40 is only living there because it's a convenient slot for it....
The gold terminals will help loads in preventing corrosion as gold doesn't tarnish (which is why it's used for connectors in computer systems too).

Gold Bits
Sounds, (pardon the pun), a bit like my first Disco. I fitted it out with Alpine equipment, mainly ex my Daihatsu Feroza. It had gold bits everywhere. All I have done to the Defender 90 is put some speakers in the my rear deck area. (just behind the cubby box). 8) The originals were just too small and too far away even in a 90 to give quality let alone audible sound.
