    PROJECT 4, Dual battery set-up

Hi all, Projects 1, 2 and 3 are very slowly getting under way and as one_iota suggested a project relating to a dual battery set-up, I will do one as Project 4.

To this end I am asking for pictures of any set ups already installed so that when I get the time to finish Projects 1, 2 and 3, I’ll have some material ready to start on number 4 as quickly as possible.

    Cheers

    Hey Drivesafe

I have some photo's off my dual battery setup in the gallery that you are welcome to use, see link below. I can borrow a camera and take some more photos if you like. My aux batteries are in the cargo area and is a basic setup a manual isolation switch, no electronic's.

    8) now listen here young camel my boy,
you gotta take the wd can outa the battery box,
its close to the pos terminal, so i guess the can contacts ground, a bump or two might just provide the combination it is looking for to short out.
the ensueing sparks might be enough to light up the wd and make a black thing out of your landie.

Hi camel_landy, post some details of how it’s wired up because I wont to put as many different types of set ups on the project site so anyone interested in doing a set up of their own can have a variety to pick from.

    OK, it's very simple.

The "Red Top" is powering the vehicle. The 2x "Yellow Tops" are wired in parallel and are powering everything else (i.e. all the aux equipment, ICE, winch, fridge, etc...). There's a direct feed from the "Yellow Tops" to the winch via a cutout switch and everything else is fed from 2x aux fuse boxes (front & rear).

To charge, I've got a split charge/isolator system which will charge the aux batteries once the main one is charged.

    Aux Battery Setup

    Hi Camel,
Are they gold audio bits I spy installed? I have been a fan of these and used them on several vehicles also. They make a neat job, particuarly the in line fuse holders. I have used gold battery clamps which provide extra pick up points for aux equipment. (The defender uses one of these for my compressor cable take off). There is also a gold terminal block that you can fit a battery sized cable feed into with several outlets. The cables and wires are usually held by allen head socket type grub screws making them very secure.
One thing that I have noticed is that when adding cables to the standard battery terminal connectors, you suddenly see excessive corrosion forming. My guess is that dissimilar metals start some sort of electrolysis, causing this corrosion, known as electrodeposition. (dictionaries are great!). The gold terminals appear to prevent this from happening. Is that why you have the can of WD40 in the battery compartment?
    cheers,
    Trev.
PS. Having said all of the above, I did have a cheap ($8.00) gold battery terminal corrode), purchased a real one for ($29.00) and no problem. So I guess there are gold coloured ones, and gold plated ones out there.
