    6 wheel drive

A couple of years ago when I was Landy shopping, I went and had a look at a 6 wheel drive (county I think) with a 3.9 Isuzu Diesel in it.It had a push button diff lock on the dash and a tray as long as a football field. The thing was pretty rough in condition, but would have made a great project. Biggest problem was the $1200 a year rego as the thing was classed as a truck. Anyway, question is, has anyone got one of these, as I've always wondered what I missed out on, and tell us what its like? Also, why no push button diff lock on later model Defenders, and would it be retro fittable?

    Hey Crump

I drive one of these every now and than (ARMY reservist), not quite the tray back version, the one I drive has a fibreglass module fitted and weighs in a nearly 6000kg. I'm not an expert on there history but I will give it a go.

The 3.9 Isuzi's are fitted with a turbo in the six wheel varients. They look like a county hoever they were purpose built for the defence force and are wider than the county. The push button diff lock (t-case diff/centre diff) would apply to the type of T-case fitted as they are vacuum operated, not sure if the newer t-case can be retro fitted to vacumm operation. It is handy having the vacuum operated centre diff lock as one can engage/disengage as one is driving at any speed.

I had a 6x6 cargo/trayback before getting the workshop varient. They get along better than the current varient as they were heaps lighter.

Gee the rego is steep, I would love to get hold of the dual cab version, not too many of these around in or out of the defence force.

This is a pic of the one I'm currently driving some of the time.

    6 wheel drive

Yeh, the guy let me have a fairly exhaustive test drive, in the bush nearby and the thing was awesome as to climbing ability, he used it to haul timber out of the scrub, besides the rego the low gearing for highway work put me off at the time, anyway I shoulda bought her, wonder if he still has it?

    Crump,
From my experience driving them they have a turning circle the same as the Army Mack truck due to the 6wd set up. Heaps of room on the tray though. The vacume operated dif lock is standard accross all Army rovers and is the same as in the COunty's- which have them in a different position down near the transmission hump. Its a while back but from memory the army 6b's had a 5 speed box though as opposed to the 4 speed in the normal rovers. You may get some better responses from the REMLR crew as they are right into this defence force stuff. I have seen a post about a 6b for sale in the REMLR section a while ago so a search for it will also reveal some more info. Cheers

IIRC, they all used the LT85, with the PTO output being used for the drive to the rear axle, which was selectable.

An old friend of mine did all the original drivetrain engineering on them when he worked for JRA.
I knew him later when he had a race car engineering workshop, I was into Jeeps, (although the race cars took precedence) and he still had Rovers, a diesel County and a RR classic.
He reckoned the extra axle, with the load sharing spring arangement was awsome off road.

G'day All, the 6x6 referred to was for sale on ebay it was located in some remote region in either S.A/N.T, it was priced at around (opening bid) I think from memory $25,000 and it needed heaps of work to bring it up to scratch needless to say it didn't get any bids, and it would have cost a few $$$$ to get it transported, this is the only 6x6 that I have seen in the remlr site hope that helps cheers Dennis

Pullsy, you are right re the turning circle it's pretty poor but one does get used to it. All ARMY Land Rover have the four speed gearboxes fitted.

I was part of the Bushmaster trial in or around 1998. As part of the trial we twicked the Izusu in the repair vehicals so that we could keep up with the trial vehicals. A larger exhaust was fitted, removed one of the air filters, left the cover to the air filter box off and sent them off to be dyno tuned. The project was about to fit snorkle, intercooler and an auto box however Defence and LRA/JRA put a stop to trialing to the mods. We had to refurb them back to orginal spec.
