Hey Crump
I drive one of these every now and than (ARMY reservist), not quite the tray back version, the one I drive has a fibreglass module fitted and weighs in a nearly 6000kg. I'm not an expert on there history but I will give it a go.
The 3.9 Isuzi's are fitted with a turbo in the six wheel varients. They look like a county hoever they were purpose built for the defence force and are wider than the county. The push button diff lock (t-case diff/centre diff) would apply to the type of T-case fitted as they are vacuum operated, not sure if the newer t-case can be retro fitted to vacumm operation. It is handy having the vacuum operated centre diff lock as one can engage/disengage as one is driving at any speed.
I had a 6x6 cargo/trayback before getting the workshop varient. They get along better than the current varient as they were heaps lighter.
Gee the rego is steep, I would love to get hold of the dual cab version, not too many of these around in or out of the defence force.
This is a pic of the one I'm currently driving some of the time.
