Has anyone reco their ZF transmission

Hi, just wondering if anyone out there has overhauled their ZF trans out of a discovery II ? Reason I am asking is looking at options as my trans has died after 272Ks I have done trans over hauls on the bigger earth moving equipment but sometimes bigger is easier.

I have seen kits from Ashcroft with the clutch packs and oil pump, bearings would be easy to source, seals and O rings come with the kit as well.

Have parts cleaner and compressor would be replacing torque converter and oil cooler too.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Jazzman recently pulled his Auto to pieces, He's on a trip at present, but he might be able to give you some advice.

Not a D2, but we had our previous D1's ZF auto reconditioned last year. It cost $4000.

Can rebuild a Road Ranger, Spicer, Mack, in my sleep, but never tried an Auto.
If I ever do, I will attain a workshop manual, and video/photograph every stage of dismantling, have everything set out in order on a clean bench, have all the parts at hand that need replacing and do it in one go.
It can't be too hard, can it?, Regards Frank.

This vid shows fixing a reverse ZF 5HP19, shows some tricks , probably similar to other Zfs. Clean work area is a must with Autos.

I did find a schematic of the ZF Disco unit on the net in PDF, can't recall the URL now but it showed each part in order.

JPAT UK for parts. dont use genuine land rover drive plate . they are to soft & bend under load. mine ended up shaped like a saucer after 600klm towing a caravan. wrecked a good oil pump on mine.

Had a look at the Jpat site does show an exploded view of the trans with the order of parts etc.

Stevo, I have a Workshop Manual for the ZF 4HP-22 sent to me from Florida, USA by a retired ZF mechanic.
I'm willing to post it to you if you are willing to look after it and post it back when you are finished with it, shows full exploded photos and diagrams and tools to use, let me know, Regards Frank.

if you order your parts from UK & you go over $ 1000 , split your order into 2 separate lots .or customs will hit you with import duty. i thought it was $1000 per item, which it is. but when you put it all together in one parcel it becomes a consinement. if that consinement is over $1000 . I cant remember what my total was but i had to pay $378 import duty.
