My 95 has a spare on the bonnet, I have not looked closely at the setup, the previous owner has travelled all over the country side and ut seems to be OK. I currently have the second spare on the roof rack, would love a swing away carrier for our simpson trip in Sept. I will have a close look tonight.

I enquired when I bought my car, & was told the bonnet mount was no longer an option with TD5s. All the bonnet reinforcing struts have been removed to shoehorn the TD5 in.

I didn't know that the TD5 engine led to the loss of the bonnet mount capability. I wonder what the Ford Transit engine change will mean. Usually when these things go, they go forever.

The spare tyre probably doesn't meet current "Crumple Zone" Specifications

defender crumple zones are on the vehicle you hit and NOT in the defender....

if they had crumple zones they would then have air bags as well.....

mine only has a passenger side windbag.....

Can be done easy (as long as you don't have a massive trye and you are not a short A*se
But you need a differant bonnett as they are stronger to take the spare wheel. The you have a metal disc in the middle which clamps the tyres donwn on to the bonnett.
Can make a standard stronger by welding braces under the skin of the old bonnett, and thenbolting the disc on the top (which you can get from the dealer)
After all that is all the are
