you need to slid a pair of metal wafers down wither side of the tank while you pull the buckle out of the clasp and wiggle the button...

Sections of ally cans folded in half inserted fold first tend to work best and I've manaed it once with a bit of plastic from a coke bottle, you need the smooth bit under the label ad its got to be a dead smooth leadding edge with no jags or tears in the leading edge, sanding a taper on it like a kif edge will also help.

Thanks mate. Not quite what the problem was but its all good now. But before I saw your advice I ended up getting desperate and pulled one apart. After doing this and effectively breaking it apart (it seems the only way to pull it apart is by snapping the plastic plugs), I worked out how the mechanism works. After sacrificing one I had the other fixed in one minute. Stupidly simple but you wouldn't know unless you took it apart. Totally worth it. Will be visiting the Land Rover graveyard on Monday for a replacement belt.
