I started doing fluid changes over the weekend and have put some Penrite HPR Gas 10 in the Disco having spoken to the Penrite guru at the LROCV tech night last week. The old oil was well due for a change due to age rather than distance travelled, but it was still pretty clean when it came out. I know the previous owner changed it himself and I think he used a non gas specific Valvoline synthetic in it. The motor is very quiet mechanically on startup now, and I'll drop it at 5K to see how it fares. But so far it seems to run nicely. At $28/5L I thought it's not too bad and I will make an effort to change it more than it needs at that price - about $36 per change for 6.7L.

Tonight I am going to drop whatever is in the LT77 and try Penrite's Manual Gear Oil 75W-80 and see what state the old stuff was in.

I run Penrite in the Fender and you can get special oil for the Manuals.

You didn't show me, but I remember seeing it on the shelf there Steve. Here's hoping it's the good gravy. It does say it's formulated for manuals where ATF is specified and meets requirements for Rover's MTF 94. We shall see!
Been to the dodgy tool shop at the market and bought a Fuk-Hing Bicycle Factory Brand "Chrom-Vanadium" Chinese made u-beaut 32mm ring spanner, so I'll do it when I get home.
You will notice it getting quieter with Penrite oil in it. Makes a huge difference to overall engine noise even at high revs.Originally posted by MacMan

You will find the oil very dirty no matter how often you change it but you will notice how clean the motor inside gets. My mazda has done 413000km and still looks new when I last had the rocker cover off. That's with the book scheduled 10,000km oil&filter changes. 8O
Pity it doesn't get cheaper buying in 20's as normally it's the better way to go with big sump capacity motors.
Hi Macman, I was at Penrites Factory a few weeks ago after rebuilding my LT77. I had tried the 75W oil and it seemed a little thick and sticky for cold starts. I spoke with the Managing Director about using full synthetic ATF or the 75W light gear oil. He suggested that the Full synthetic ATF was going to perform better if the box got hot or was worked hard.
It's about $36 for a 4 litre Synthetic ATF from Penrite, you need 2.5 litres for the LT77.
Well I just finished the job and went for a 40 minute beetle around to warm things up and then screamed down the freeway home. The soup that came out of it was reddish in colour, contained a fair bit of grey silt and the filter in the 5th gear drain had some ashy black flakes of who knows what and one piece of plastic in it. Yes, PLASTIC! I have taken pics which I will zap into my gallery.
The change itself was pretty straight forward and made a heap easier with the Tom Thumb oil pump. Jeez it's nice having some space under a vehicle for once!
Right from cold the box felt heaps better, with nothing sticking or baulking which was normally a problem for the last lot of whatever it was. High rev changes were smooth and clean and mechanical noise from the box was lessened. There was not such a crotchetty feel through the lever and it just slipped cleanly all the way through the detents to the stops. Think less truck like and more like a small Jap sedan. I'm very pleased!

Interesting how the same thing can have different results some times.
Last week I changed the ATF in my LT77 for Penrite MTF and the box became very baulky when cold. Didn't actually grind, but not as smooth as before.
Replaced the brand new Penrite for Castrol Synthetic ATF and re-found my old gear change. Not quite as silky smooth but a million times better than before the MTF.
I'm in Canberra so when I say gearbox cold I mean COLD.
The box had plenty of cold shed time last night, and the drive to work was still easier than whatever the previous oil was. Time shall tell! I figure by 1000km I should have a pretty good idea.

I have used Penrite oils for about 20 years - parts place originally recommended it for a worn moter 8) . I have used it for everything since then and love it. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img]
