Apologies if I'm stating the obvious; but the hand primer on the lift pump on mine works by pushing it away from you. Did a fair amount of cussin' until I figured that one out. Every other pump I've encountered works the other way; that is, up, or towards you.

Hmmm, can't remember exactly now but, yes, I suspect I would have been pulling the lever outwards. Might pop the bleed screw out and try it shortly.

Also, I believe that the pump needs to be 'off the cam', if you see what I mean.
