Gear change up to 5th in Defender?

Just wondered at what speed, fellow defender drivers change up to 5th gear.

In the short time Ive had the vehicle it feels like anything above 80kph feels right.

    Opinions?

    Cheers

80kph sounds about right .. might go up to 90kph if needed to go uphill fast .... or Toyota in close proximity

I concur with the gernerally held 80-ish.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Anything above 60 is fine with mine for general cruising. It'll pull from 60 in 5th, or 4th for a bit more acceleration.

If accelerating hard I leave it till 80, or very hard 100. (Depends who's trying to keep up!). 8)

on flat road if im not trying to lift the front wheels off the ground 5th will go in at 40 or 50 kph.....and slowly keep accelerating.......
if i need to move i will use 4th.....

i take 4th anywhere from 60 to just over 100kph before i change to 5th....
this depends on conditions such as up or down hill or whether im towing....

I agree with ZOOK. About 50 if I'm going to be moping along unloaded in a 60 zone. 4th if I'm in a rush or a bit heavier, up to about 80 (on the flat). I've never had a need to rush it up a large hill as I try to use momentum....

Usually get away in 2nd, 3rd sometimes even on a downhill start.

You don't have much momentum going up the Toowoomba Range!
Agree with the second gear starts unloaded and on the flat.

I flog mine til it screams before changing up.

    Nah, just kidding.

Top throw something else into the mix - when would you use 5th gear when towing ? Is it recommended at all ? If so, at what speeds would you change up to and down from 5th :?: I ask because MR have a Defender in there at the moment (so Mrs Vlad tells me) that has stripped a gear in the box, due to use of 5th gear towing a heavy load (she says they said that). Anyway - thoughts :?:
