"phillip A" springs don't wear out????? if they have sagged have they not worn out? now i know they aren't made of mild steel, but if its constantly in compression and tension surely it must not have the same rebound, extension, load carrying capcity or free lenght over time, my fronts only have 50mm bumpstop (d110) with org LR bumper and the first 3 1/2 coils are fully compressed parked on level ground.

The point I was making is that if the spring is at specified free length when pulled out it is perfectly OK. The rate does not change . NO the metal does not somehow become weaker.
A spring's rate is entirely dependent on its diameter and length given the same steel spec.
How many people just take their springs out assuming they are "worn out" when it is just the shocks which have caused the floaty ride.
If yours are like you say they are probably sagged . I take it they are progressively wound, Ie the top coils are supposed to be closer so that the rate is low on light bumps, and then as the spring compresses, the top coils bind, the spring then becomes effectively shorter and so the rate increases. I have never seen a constant rate spring sag selectively on only a few coils.
They could be reset but this is not often succesful. BUT check the free length before you chuck em. Maybe they were always like that. BUT I bet they are short.

Factory shocks are the best for ride and are good quality. Made by Boge who supply Merc, BMW and most other European cars. Nearly every other shock will have worse ride. Not like jap crap.
Avoid poly bushes at all costs, as they feed all the shocks through to the body.
There I have now defied all of the conventional wisdom. Funny how factory engineers must be the dumbest ones on Earth.

Funny how two sets of factory "Boge" shock absorbers were replaced on my Defender, 1st at under 20,000km the others before the 50,000 expiry on warranty purely leaking copious amounts of oil.
The 2nd set were not on more then 3,000km before I took them off and replaced with my old Bilsteins off my '76 Rangie, their still going strong at 200,000 and they get worked and are awsome off road. also ditto for factory steering stabaliser lasted about 60,000km, Bilstien still working fine.
I've still got the factory Boge any one wants to make an offer, Ill never use them.
And rubber is definately the way to go for bushes.
Both sets of my springs were 2" shorter when removed from compression, I've now got larger diam wire, 2" lift and yes with the weight I carry, handles like a dream. The car is never unloaded so I won't notice unladen spring, and Defenders were built to be loaded to the hilt.
When the LRA fit bull bars and winches to the fronts of Defenders they don't give you heavier springs to compensate, the factory ones just sag quicker than they should over time, I think they use licorace for wire.
Just a few observations, cheers
Bryce
