ramps for s1 disco

I need some ramps for the other car (volvo 850) and it would be nice if I could use them for the s1 tdi disco as well. Supercheap sell 750kg (per axle?)rated ones for about $45 whilst the "4wd" version is $95.

At 750kg per corner the cheap ramps should be able to cope with the discos weight shouldnt they? Total weight is only 1800kgs or so and even allowing for the heavier front end I couldnt imagine more than 1200kgs up front ? (alloy nudge bar, no winch etc)

I don't want to take unnecessary risks but nor do I want to spend more than needed on something which will be used very infrequently. Any experiences/recommendations?

It depends what you need them for.

Most jobs you should be able to do with the vehicle on the ground. Those jobs that require lifting the truck up I usually find that axle stands are a better option.

I would be wary of using anything from supercheap if safety is involved. I would be tempted to go the 4wd type as the others at 750kg probably means it breaks at 750kg and has no safe working load built in - in the good old day SWL was always on equipemnent and destruct was normally about 2 and half times that - I think I would be trying Repco or bettter still a tool shop to get some. Alternatively get the cheap one and reinforce it.

I have home made ramps and they are twice as heavy as the store bought type - and I am still wary of them. Even on the ramps I still put jack stands under - just in case.

yeah the words safety and supercheap arent exactly synonomous :?

I think theyll be fine for the volvo t5 which has nil ground clearance and if I need to use them on the disco then I'll do some extra strengthening.

Fortunately I have access to a 4 post lift at work for anything major.

I bought the $60-70 ones from Auto Barn a few years back to change the oil in my Escort and then my Commodore during UNI, i use the same ramps for the disco no and they are fine, the havent bent or warped or anything like that and none of the welds or other part of the ramps look stressed. matt

Seriously though, I've done everything right up to removing my gearbox and on a seperate occasion, the TC without jacking or raising the vehicle.
Used a jack whenidid the springs, but not for room, for the other obvious reason.

Just to clarify, the $47 ones were from Repco who reckoned they'd be fine for the disco. They looked the same product as supercheap sell, just $2 cheaper!

As I said I may never use them on the disco, its mainly for the low clearance sedan but just in case it'd be nice to know I could ramp up the disco and safely crawl under.

Hi Maurice, i personally dont see you having a problem, they would be the same as mine, i got mine from Auto Barn as i said, but they are all pretty much the same just different colours. I use mine everytime i change the oil and havent had a problem. Its more of a safety issue when you are servicing a car, as if the ramps fails there isnt enough clearance underneath for your body so something will get trapped, under a disco you can crawl around without lifting it so should the ramps buckle under the weight you wont get squashed, just make sure when ever you use them the wheels are directly in the centre of the ramps so you spread the weight evenly.
