Strange squeak - FIXED

    Has anyone experienced this before?

My Defender has a squeak from somewhere around the front wheels. It is most apparent when the vehicle has been sitting for some time, particularly overnight, and (which may be my imagination, I'm not sure) if it has been raining. It also gets slightly worse when steering, particularly left.

It all but disappears when everything is nicely warmed up. The frequency is in time with the rotation of the wheels, and though it sounds like crud in the brakes or rust on the disc, or a squeaky pad, it doesn't disappear when the brake pedal is depressed.

I had the vehicle serviced recently and asked them to check it out. When I picked it up they reckoned they couldn't find a squeak, but said it would be the brakes and was nothing to worry about. They also diagnosed a faulty ABS wheel sensor which was duly replaced.

When the noise is at its worst, say first thing in the morning, the traction control cuts in when setting off from standstill, on perfectly dry road.

I suppose it could be crud in the brakes but I would have thought that would have been picked up at the service. Wheel bearing perhaps? I would just like to know if anyone has experienced this before I take it back. At the moment I am incapable of removing the wheel myself for a look as I have stuffed my back.

More often than not when I have had this sort of noise,
    It is...........

A cat stuck in the fan belt. Loads of fun for the whole family. Bets on how long it will keep squealing for.
Sorry, have not had any unusual squeaks in the Fender, just lots of normal ones.

I second the brake gaurd, they bend easily and could be rubbing, and quite often get rocks and **** stuck in behind them between the disc.

have you managed to work out which side the noise is coming from?

have you checked to see there is nothing stuck in the rim ...like an inch of mud and some small stones.....

and check the brake shield isn't bent....

    start with the simple stuff.....

and another vote for the brake shield here. Had sticks, rocks, and the lower mount cracked and the shield touching the disc intermittently.

Forgot to add I had a weird, intermitent squeak from the left rear wheel when cold. It was a brake pad.

but that would have gone away when the brakes were pressed.....

there is also the handbrake drum which may be doing exactly the same thing....
