    Sedimenter maintenance-300tdi

Still getting the new disco ready for our august trip. All going well but my mechanic friend tells me it is important to take the sedimenter apart and clean it thouroughly, not just drain at the tap. Having read about this in my Haynes it looks like a PIA to re prime the fuel system. I also remeber a recent post saying not to use the lever on the lift pump - so I am considering handing over to the pros on this job. This is my first diesel and I am not confident fiddling with it too much. Do others do this job themselves - any dramas? 8O 8O

    thanks

Shouldn't be any drama, make sure you get a new nylon drain plug though they go very brittle.

Once its clean just reassemble and start the thing and it will sort itself out.

I second a replacement for the drain.
I use a stanless steel socket head cap screw (allen head bolt) I had on the shelf after breaking the OE plug early on.

to bleed, just slighly crack the bleed screw on top of the fuel filter and use the lift pump, I have for the last four years without a problem.
    It's all very straight forward.

BTW, the sedimentor is a great idea. The amount of water and crap it traps before even getting to the filter is amazing.
We also have a Nissan Patrol that only has a filter, no sedimentor, and it ends up with quite a lot of water and crap the the Landy doesn't get.

I have always undone the 10mm bolt at the top of the filer housing - so I dont break off the nylon piece. The bolt goes though the housing

This way you can give the complete bowl a good wash out.

I've been considering doing this for a while but have always been worried whether, not being sure of their relative levels, the contents of the tank would syphon itself out onto the ground while I had the bowl off. Do you need to do this with a near-empty tank or any other precautions? Thanks.

I've never had this problem with my Disco or Rangie.

It was an experienced LR mechanic who showed my how to do this years ago.

I usually use something like Carby cleaner to clean the bowl out fully.

Yes I agree this is the only way to clean out the sedimeter. Don't worry about the deisel running out, it stops quickly full tank and all.. No need to prime either.

I've also heard of replacing the centre section with a Delphi paper filter makes it work better, but I have not used so can't confirm, any one?

    Cheers
