Question T-off to Wastegate broken on a Tdi, what Damage can be Done?

    Gents....
I've recently starting hearing a "air leaking" sound on my Tdi D1. I had a chance to have a quick look today and noticed that the Hose T-off to the Waste Gate has broken off. Before I found this, I noticed that if I planted my Foot on the "Try & Go-Fast" pedal, that the Boost Gauge would go reach 20>22psi where as before it would only reach 17psi max.
As the car is my daily driver, my time to fix it is limited, so I was wondering if I keep driving the vehicle normally and watch the boost gauge and make sure I keep the boost no more than 17, will I cause any damage to my engine etc? If I drive it normally now, I don't really hear the "air leak" sound, only when I plant my foot.....

Looking at it, it looks like the barb has broken off where the hose slides over the barb....
How easy is it to fix and where the easiest place to source parts?

I fiddled with one of those a couple of days ago, the tee looks just fine. The barbs are short but adequate for the job. All you need is a new piece of rubber hose between the fitting and the waste gate, I imagine a piece of 1/4" fuel hose would suffice. You can easily unscrew the fitting from the turbo outlet to clean the broken bit of hose off the barb.

it just means your wastegate isnt opening so you're getting more boost.

more boost for the same fuel = lower egt...

On my tdi I'm only concerned when the boost gauge is past 30 and thats only because that means its on the stop so whatevers going in might be damaging the guage

Worry more about your EGT than the boost

Cheers for that, I wasn't aware of that.....
I was a bit concerned because I was actually thinking my EGT's were running a bit higher for the same sort of driving.....

they shouldnt be unless you're using more pedal down lower to get it up to boost or if the extra boost is carrying too much heat through the intercooler raising your inlet air temp

Theres other factors that add more to the EGT I run 50 degrees cooler first thing in the morning going to work than I do coming home in the afternoon. which servo I hit for fuel if I use my own special blend of whatever the hell I can find windage

About the only damage that extra boost might do is blow out a weak intercooler hose. That happened to a mate of mine this afternoon after we raised the boost a bit.

Isn't anyone worried about turbo damage because of too much boost? Or is the stock turbo on tdi way more capable than boosts we are normally running?

    boost

Rob, I think you are on the right path by avoiding too much boost. I would do as you suggest and stay at or below 20 psi, that's already 40% more than the makers recommendation. The Tdi is fairly conservatively tuned power wise, so there's some room for extra tuning and boost etc. From my reading it seems they are regularly tuned with boost up to 1.5 bar, about 22 psi without too much effect on reliability. The compression ratio is 19 to 1, so theoretically you have 38 atmospheres (abs), at top dead center from compression, at one bar boost.
At 1.5 bar boost you have 47 atmospheres, that's before the fuel is injected. It means your head and head gasket are under quite a bit more load. For reliability sake I would stay away from boost pressures over 1.5 bar. My VNT has the vane controls set for 1.5 bar as well. Occasionally it gets up there but I usually avoid it , I'm thinking of adjusting it back to 20 psi. cheers simmo

you mean like say 26 psi? (but you have to work the buggery out of the fueling EGT and RPM to do it)

Heres a thread with more detail.

barring vagaries 21/22 is what you can reasonably pull out of stock bits (but I recommend silicone hoses.) BUT you fit an EGT and Boost gauge before you go to far.

First mod should always be re routing the wastegate actuator pickup from the compressor housing to the back of the manifold.
