Which LT230 is this? Cant find the serial #!

    Hi guys,

I am having a clear out and was trying to identify the LT230 transfer case I have.

Going off the workshop manual I am looking in the right place and my transfer case does have some marking there, but nothing that matches up with any kind of serial number.

    Any ideas?

Guessing it's been rebuilt at some point and those are stamps from then... The serial number will be elsewhere and longer..

IMO the serial number is faded below that number closer to the margin cos it seems to me that it is something there, see this [ame]https://youtu.be/vWVbMP1yqoA[/ame]

Thanks guys, i did watch that ashcroft video and one of the locations is the picture above, the other is:

    [/URL]

Neither of which is a serial.
I couldnt see any other markings, it came out of my 1984 LR90, not sure if it is the original transfer case.

Well there you go, it has no serial number because the vehicle it came from doesn't exist! 90s weren't released until a couple of years after the one-ten was released in 1983.

If the number on the side that ends in 82 is a date, you may be holding a pre-production prototype LT230???

My 90 is definitely a very early model so it is possible I guess. I will have another look next time I am out at the car. I know the truck was a 2.5 NA diesel when it left the factory but was a 3.9 V8 when i bought it.

The Range Rover TF727 auto became an option in 1982 and they were using the LT230 the RR also acquired the LT77 5 speed in 1983 so like the 110 1983 model the early production vehicles with those LT230 commenced production in 1982.

I guess it comes down to taking off the bottom cover and start counting teeth.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

The car had the V8 & LT77 box when i bought it, that might have come from an early RR. Looks like counting the teeth it is!

If the '82 is right it might be an LT230R not T. So the easiest thing would be to check first if it has taper roller bearings on the intermediate shaft.
