i believe timing case cover is different?
and that has something to do with engine mounts?
Will a 300TDi out of a manual Defender bolt up in place in an Disco auto engine bay?.
TIA

if you have the 2 vehicles sitting next to each other complete, Yes, no problems but its not just as simple as engine out, engine out, swap positions engine in and discard the broken one then scrap the donor vehicle.
from memory you need to change
mounts, bell housing adaptor, timing cover, AC pump mounts, and you do the head gasket and bolts while you're at it as you have to take 2 of them out to change the air filter, throttle plate on the Injector pump. the fuel line to the lift pump from the filter needs to come off to use the disco one and same same for the return line from the injector pump. I think theres a couple of minor changes for the wiring but you should be pulling that off anyway, Be careful of how you orient the connectors on the 2 senders up on the front of the engine for the AC and overheat controls, if you get them the wrong way around your ac wont work. Check them with a meter as while they are supposed to go in a certain way, they dont always and they may be faulty, its worth checking them with a meter and a hot air gun while the engines out OR blanketing the radiator and letting the engine "overheat" a little to make sure the switches still cut over appropraitely. DONT shut down with the engine hot, pull the blanket and let it cool down for 5 minutes first at high then low idle for a minute.
if you're going defender to disco you can omit this by just having at the mount with a grinder but be careful.
the pump tune is a little different for an auto disco compared to the manual (any) but its not massive.

Sure will as ive done it
The only difference is the Deefer has the air cleaner brackets on the right hand side of the head , All i did with these as i did not want to remove head bolts and disturb the torque and gasket was to angle grind the brackets offruff but served well .
Also the spigot bush has to be removed from the crank if fitting to a auto easy enough using the grease hydrualic trick
The timing covers are the same inc.
Thanks for the replies gents and to clarify, I am considering using a (good so no need to change anything) TDi out of a R380 Defer in one of my (auto) Discos.
timing cover changes might be for the tdi200, and/or very early AC vs non AC tdi300s
