Do any of the uninsulated sections of the winding touch each other?
Aaron
I'm after a bit of auto elec advice, unsure if this should go here or the electrical diagnosis section, but I think this section gets a bit more traffic.
I attempted to pull my alternator apart today to replace the bearings as I had narrowed down a god aweful racket to the alternator or idler pulley.
When I went to remove the pulley, I placed an extension bar on the fan to stop it spinning, a crank of the socket on the pulley resulted in a pretty decent stuff up. The extension held the internal fan still, however it flattened the fans 'blades' down and I ended up taking about half a dozen, 3-4mm sections of the coating off the wiring inside the alternator. Is there anyway to re seal the windings? Is it necessary? Have I completely cock and balls this one up?
Turns out the bearings were pretty much okay anyway, so what a pain in the backside! I have damaged, maybe beyond repair what would seem to be a fine alternator!

It is hard to tell. Maybe, maybe not. I might be able to get them apart from each other.
As silly as it might sound, I was going to cover them in clear nail polish to sort of seal them in.
Varnish or araldite or similar even fibreglass resin will do it as long as the wires do not touch each other.

I'll seperate them, then coat them, and stick them back in place. Cheers for the help
IF the windings ARE touching and I don't fix it properly, am I looking at over heating, or an over voltage/amp, or just the alternator not working?
Shorting, and failure if they are touching.

Well I'll be sure to take my time then. I appreciate the help.
It depends upon how many turns are between two touching wires.
Aaron
I managed to get it sorted this morning, I took my time and made sure I had seperated the effected wires before cleaning them and then applying some Araldite. It dried, I soldered some wires back together, replaced a bearing, back into the car and bobs your uncle. Well, it wasn't that simple, but those were the main bits.
The horrible noise has gone, it is still supplying 14.1v at idle so happy days. Thanks for the advice Bearman
Pleased to hear you got it all sorted Sean. Use a rattle gun on the pulley nut next time - it is really easy if you have one. That way there is no chance of damaging the windings.![]()
