I recently bought a 97 tdi disco and have been very happy with its performance. I do a lot of highway driving and as long as you pick your spots overtaking is no problem. Seems very happy cruising at 110, I try and drive economically so I dont push it much harder. Around town its not exactly quick off the mark but it gives you time to enjoy the view from up there :wink:

I chose the diesel over petrol primarily for economy, longjevity and resale value. Off road engine braking was also a factor as Ive got some steep downhill tracks on my property. Greater fuel economy will obviously increase your range in remote areas and lessen the need to carry extra fuel.

My other car is a volvo t5 high pressure turbo which will happily do 250kph (no first hand experience of this I'm afraid )and 0-60 in 6.5 seconds but I generally prefer to drive the disco.

I have a V8 disco and a diesel freelander - I would go the diesel disco. The V8 might be quicker at the lights but on the road the diesel is more than a match for the V8 - I have been driving my disco while someone else was driving my freelander and on the road I was flat out keeping up and my freelander has only 72kw.

While diesel is more expensive to buy the much better fuel economy will more than offset the increased fuel cost.

Diesel is the way to go.

if you are really serious i suggest you take both for a test drive!
im a petrol head(vee8 disco 3.5l) if i bought a diesal, the way i drive
it would have died long ago!.
my only prob with my disco is the fuel economy or lack of it!
but that said the new pootrol and vee8 kroozer return worse
figures than mine!

I've got the 97 v8 on gas. A week doesn't go by that I don't comment on how nice it is to drive.
BUT
I only get 300-320km out of a tank of gas, but considering LPG prices this is annoying more than costly.
Had the budget extended further when I bought it I would have gone diesel.
Happy to say I'm about to add a Td5 to the collection.

There was a thread here recently that had a link to a spreadsheet to compare conversion costs etc.

I dispute that. LPG is currently 1/3rd the price of petrol or diesel.

I use twice as much LPG (20l/100km) as a Disco diesel (10l/100km).

Therefore, without taking oil changes into account (cheaper on a V8), the LPG powered V8 costs 2/3rds that of a diesel.

Also, the timing belt doesn't need regular changing on a V8.

A diesel will, however, give much greater range on a tankful which is important if you are crossing the desert.

There is little reason to go for a V8, a 300tdi will keep up with a V8 on cruise and leave it for dead offroad. If the zoom zoom is what you looking for, you might go a later model Disco with TD5 engine. It's ECU can be re-mapped to deliver around 130kw ... also, resale value is much higher on diesel.

Well coming from the Uk where petrol and diesel are $3 a ltr . I would go for the diesel. Lot less hassle to run and live with and cheaper on the feul.
BTW the cost of feul in the Uk is killing the prices of a V8 land Rover product. Which means there is a huge diffeance between a Diesel truck and petrol truck second hand prices
A 97 Disco Diesel is $18400 and the same age and spec V8 one is $10300

I didn't mention anything about LPG - a diesel Disco will be cheaper to run than a petrol (not lpg) disco even taking into account the increased cost of diesel over petrol - though in Canberra at the moment Diesel is cheaper than petrol.
