This has previously been given a tick of approval on this forum but I thought this may be interesting.
A mate of mine did some dyno testing on his race car, a full race front running classic Mini Cooper. Remember the oil in a Mini has to work especially hard as it has to lubricate both the engine and the transmission/diif because the gearbox is the sump for the engine.
On his engine dyno, some of the well-known premium oils were dropping 30psi, most of them were dropping 20 to 25 psi after a full flat chat work out.
The Gulf Western 20W/50 held its own, dropping 4 to 5 psi when running at 230/240 deg F.
The 20/50 still has zink and all the good stuff in it and is designed for older cars built before 2000. Good for flat tappet engines like the Rover V8.
It's made in Australia, and it's cheap ? 4 litres currently on sale for $7.40 at Supercheap!
I have been using Gulf Western for a number of years now, V8, 300TDi with no problems, I do 10,000klm oil changes and top of engine is clean and no sludge anywhere.
Before I started using GW I was wary because of it's cheap price, retailers saying it was **** (I asked if **** why are they selling it). My Son worked in the mines in Kalgoorlie and the company he worked for used it in their trucks and drill rigs.
So I sent an email to GW asking why retailers bagged their product and why was it so cheap.
To my surprise I received a phone call from the General manager and we talked for half an hour or so.
He (can't remember name) stated that GW was a wholly Australian Family Owned business and their main customers were the big mining company's and as the oil is sourced locally(?) and blended in Australia by Australians and they outsell Penrite.
This meant that they didn't have to pay royalties to big overseas oil companies. like Caltex, Shell etc..
He guaranteed that if anything ever went wrong with my engine as a direct result of GW oil he would replace anything that broke.
So I figured an Aussie family owned company, with a General manager willing to back his product and an explanation of the cheap price, that I would use it, I also use it in my ACCO truck with a Turbo Perkins engine, I have no problem with this oil, Ring/email GW with any concerns, Regards Frank.
