Before our trip, the whole of the underneath of the car was painted in a black tart that had obviously been sprayed on. After our trip, there are a number of areas where this has be wiped off, and in come cases the underlying paint.
Does anyone have any recomendations for what to put back on in it's place?

<span style="color:green">just go to super crap and get a 4 litre tin of underbody sealer/sound deadener and brush it on (with a brush you are prepared to throw away)
this stuff also comes in spray cans but gets too expensive.......and doesnt coat as thick as with a brush.</span>
In the UK they tend to talk alot about something called Waxoil.
I have no idea what it is or if it's available in Australia.

Sounded interesting but I have no idea if there is anyone in Australia who does a similar service.

thats the same thing greylandy was talking about.....
are you going for looks on the underbody?
or practicality.... underbody sealer is about $30-$35 for a 4litre tin....
to get the underbody done with that kleentect stuff would be a hell of a lot more...... if you prefer to spray it on..you can buy a splatter gun from super crap and get the sealer in 1 litre containers that screw straight onto the gun....
when I was in the LROC of Brisbane, one of the guys there (Kevin I think he was called) had a '85 County that he kept in immaculate condition - including the underbody.
That vehicle & it's driver was awesome off-road, and awe-inspiring onroad.
Nothing wrong with good looks as well 8)

Goto Bunnings or simalar,there is a waterbased bitumen product you brush on,used for ponds/buildings etc,great stuff,you can build it up in layers as it dries as a sound deadner and waterproofer.Gripset is one of the brands,probably cheaper and a better product than a supercrap item.

In some areas the galvanising is scratched off and surface rust is starting... better stop it now 8O

I have used waxoil and have some still in the garage - it is more of a rust preventative than a bitumin type undersealer.
It is, as it says - wax oil - it has a grease type consistency and if you put it on your hand it starts to melt from you body heat - a bit like some hand cleaners do.
You heat it up and spray waxoil in the cars hidden cavities where it creeps and solidifies. The beauty of it though, is that when the outside temp gets up around 35-40 degrees it becomes liquid and creeps some more so it is continually covering the metal.
I used it on a jag I had in the UK to stop the tin worm - put in about 3 litres - when I brought the car back to Australia it was summer and for the next month the wax oil was constantly oozing out. 22 years later I still have the jag and the waxoil is still there and the rust stopped. Its only downside is that dirt sticks to it a bit.
In the UK now the term waxoil is now applied to many different products.
