Looks like the D2 one is just four normal 8mm nuts.
Wonder how easily I'll find a wrecker game enough to pull out the inflator, chuck it away and send me the rest![]()
I need to replace my D1 NON SRS steering wheel which has complete degraded down to the foam.
I prefer the thinner SRS wheel in my wreck D1 but it has the obvious problem of removing the airbag.
I want to know if it is possible to remove the inflator module from the centre pad. Having a look at this link on a Lexus forum seems to show that it is a case of four nuts only, but looking at the D1 module (top pic) they appear to be security nuts and rivets as well.
The D2 module (lower pic) appears to lack the rivets.
Has anyone studied one closely enough (either D1/2) to see how the inflator module is retained and if it is possible to remove it?

All i know is that they go off with a bang when removed from a vehicle and set off.

Question is, do you need to? The airbag can't really do anything unless it is activated. That won't happen if it is not wired up, as they fire electrically.. I would look at just fitting the SRS wheel complete. Only thing, is it legal?

Indeed. Typing 'airbag prank' into YouTube will show you some supposedly amusing videos. These are mostly US airbags, which are bigger and more powerful than those used here, as there is no "supplementary" restraining Yanks due to their no seat belt law position. But ours are every bit as dangerous to muck about with.

I have one off here that i/you could investigate closer?
Cheers, is it a D1 or D2 wheel? I've got a D1 type here and its riveted in.
