V8 Inlet Manifold Gasket Replacement Question

A very simple one here, does the new gasket go on dry, or should I give it a spray of Hylomar or something?

    Cheers - Gav.

    G`day ,

the newer style coated ones need none because the coating does the job , only the seal ends need a cover and don`t tighten them fully until the manifold is tensioned down .

The metal ones need a thin coating around the coolant ports and same for end seals but no need on the mating surfaces it`s why they have raised ridges around the ports .

If a metal one is reused then yes coat it but i`d suggest only using hylomar spray for the mating surfaces not from a tube . Around the coolant ports tubed hylomar sparingly/thin so as not to block the ports .

The single most important thing to do with the composite gaskets is to check and retighten the bolts after a modest period of service. It's not unusual for me to find most of the bolts hardly more than finger tight after a couple of years of service without follow up checks.

I got the feeling when tensioning the manifold up just before that they would need re doing at some point. I ended up using Hylomar on the faces of the gasket, and RTV in the corners where the seals join the gasket. The previous person who had done the job had used silicone and there wasn't much left of that. I've probably fixed the small oil leak that was at the back corner of the engine at the same time.

    Thanks for all the replies.
